Fascia is what holds us together, it is connective tissue that is woven around each and every muscle, bone, nerve, organ, artery and vein in our bodies. Supporting structure, tension, and suspension for tissues; "scaffolding". Fascia provides fluid mobility; high amount of plasticity. Fascia connects multiple muscles providing a functional kinetic chain.
Fascia adhesion or 'stickiness' is caused by lower levels of oxygen/nutrients/blood perfusion, either from lack of movement, traumatic injury, strain, or repetitive stresses (sports/poor posture/repetitive work). Not only is there a decrease of oxygen to these injured or strained muscles and tissues, there is an accumulation of calcium, congealed fluids, poorly circulating substances (blood, lymph, watery substance in the fascia) that are creating dysfunction in the muscle cells, leading to chronic spasm and pain.
Acupuncture is excellent at stimulating the nervous system to release fascia tension; breaking up physical stickiness and encouraging an increase of blood, lymph, and fluid circulation; flushing out calcium, inflammatory compounds, and other metabolic waste.
