1. October 9, 1984: W. Wilson Goode became the first African American Mayor of Philadelphia. (see first picture)
2. October 11, 1887: Alexander Miles invented elevator doors that could automatically open and close. His invention made riding an elevator much safer. He was awarded the US Patent No. 371,207. (see second picture)
3. October 16, 1859: John Brown led a small band of less than 50 men in a raid against the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. Their aim was to capture enough ammunition to lead a large operation against Virginia’s slaveholders.
4. October 16, 1995: Hundreds of thousands of Black men gathered in Washington, D.C. for the Million Man March, one of the largest demonstrations of its kind in the capital’s history. The march was intended to bring about a kind of spiritual renewal among Black men, and to instill them with a sense of solidarity and of personal responsibility to improve their own condition.
