70 projects planned in Lithuania to mark the year of Vilna Gaon and Jewish history

The government has approved a programme for marking 2020 as the Year of the Vilna Gaon and the History of the Jews of Lithuania, covering almost 70 different projects.

Deputy Government Chancellor Deividas Matulionis says the planned initiatives will help draw attention to Lithuania's “rich history which is inseparable from the history of Lithuania's Jews”. Read more.

President Gitanas Nausėda on a first working visit to Riga

During his first working visit to Riga, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Latvian President Egils Levits. The President of Lithuania called for resuming trilateral presidential summits to discuss urgent political, economic, regional defense and security issues. The meeting also focused on energy independence and strategic transport  infrastructure projects.

Topical issues on the European Union agenda discussed with Poland

On 23 July, Vice-Minister Albinas Zananavičiaus met with his counterpart from Poland Konrad Szymański, who was paying a visit in Vilnius. They discussed on-going negotiations on the European Union multiannual financial framework, tackling climate change, and other topical issues on the EU agenda.

Startups to test their technology with public sector


In Lithuania, a GovTech Lab will soon become operational seeking to help address problems of the public sector by means of innovative solutions. The initiative of the Ministry of the Economy and Innovation will offer a possibility for start-ups to test their technology with the public sector and also will facilitate the technology commercialization, Startup Lithuania announces. How building a Tesla factory on Minecraft brought classroom innovations to Lithuania


A couple of years ago, gaming fans in Lithuania decided to reach out to Tesla in a unique way – by constructing a huge virtual factory on Minecraft. It not only won recognition around the world, but also brought innovations to the country’s schools, according to a press release.

Lithuania climbs up at Global Innovation Index


Lithuania rose two places to rank 38th out of 129 countries worldwide on the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2019.

Lithuania made it to the top ten in four categories, ranking 4th in mobile app creation and in females employed with advanced degrees, 7th in the pupil-teacher ratio in secondary education, and 10th in ISO 14001 environmental certificates.

Vilnius Airport to open planespotting site for 'aviation lovers'


A public plane spotting site will be erected near Vilnius Airport this year, according to a press release. “Aviation amateur [plane-spotting] ranks are expanding rapidly not only globally but also in Lithuania,” says Dainius Čiuplys, head of Vilnius Airport.

A convenient location for the site, which is raised above the ground and will also be accessible to the disabled, is planned to be set up next to the Salininkai Gardens, right behind the fence of Vilnius Airport, where everyone can enter. Read more.

‘We Are the Baltic Way’ – Lithuania prepares to celebrate 30th anniversary of landmark protest

The 30th anniversary of the 1989 peaceful anti-Soviet demonstration, in which two million people formed a human chain stretching from Vilnius to Tallinn, will be marked this year with the slogan ‘Batlijos kelias – tai mes’ (‘We Are the Baltic Way’). Read more.
