A Stranger Among Saints: Stephen Hopkins, the Man Who Survived Jamestown and Saved Plymouth by Jonathan Mack

In 1609, on a voyage to resupply England’s troubled Jamestown colony, the Sea Venture was caught in a hurricane and shipwrecked off the coast of Bermuda. The tale of its marooned survivors eventually inspired William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, but for one castaway it was only the beginning.

A Stranger Among Saints traces the life of Stephen Hopkins, who spent ten months stranded with the Sea Venture crew, during which he was charged with attempted mutiny and condemned to die—only to have his sentence commuted just before it was carried out. Hopkins eventually made it to Jamestown, where he spent six years before returning to England and signing on to another colonial venture, this time with a group of religious radicals on the Mayflower.

Hopkins was the only member of the party who had been across the Atlantic before—the only one who’d encountered America’s native people and land. The Pilgrims, plagued by disease and contentious early encounters with indigenous Americans, turned to him for leadership. Hopkins played a vital role in bridging the divide of suspicion between the English immigrants and their native neighbors. Without him, these settlers would likely not have lasted through that brutal first year.

The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede

The True Story Behind the Events on 9/11 that Inspired Broadway’s Smash Hit Musical Come from Away, Featuring All New Material from the Author

When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill.

As the passengers stepped from the airplanes, exhausted, hungry and distraught after being held on board for nearly 24 hours while security checked all of the baggage, they were greeted with a feast prepared by the townspeople. Local bus drivers who had been on strike came off the picket lines to transport the passengers to the various shelters set up in local schools and churches. Linens and toiletries were bought and donated. A middle school provided showers, as well as access to computers, email, and televisions, allowing the passengers to stay in touch with family and follow the news.

Over the course of those four days, many of the passengers developed friendships with Gander residents that they expect to last a lifetime. As a show of thanks, scholarship funds for the children of Gander have been formed and donations have been made to provide new computers for the schools. This book recounts the inspiring story of the residents of Gander, Canada, whose acts of kindness have touched the lives of thousands of people and been an example of humanity and goodwill.

The Return by Nicholas Sparks - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

In the romantic tradition of Dear John, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sparks returns with the story of an injured Navy doctor — and two women whose secrets will change the course of his life.

Trevor Benson never intended to move back to New Bern, North Carolina. But when a mortar blast outside the hospital where he worked sent him home from Afghanistan with devastating injuries, the dilapidated cabin he'd inherited from his grandfather seemed as good a place to regroup as any.

Tending to his grandfather's beloved beehives, Trevor isn't prepared to fall in love with a local . . . yet, from their very first encounter, Trevor feels a connection with deputy sheriff Natalie Masterson that he can't ignore. But even as she seems to reciprocate his feelings, she remains frustratingly distant, making Trevor wonder what she's hiding.

Further complicating his stay in New Bern is the presence of a sullen teenage girl, Callie, who lives in the trailer park down the road. Trevor hopes Callie can shed light on the mysterious circumstances of his grandfather's death, but she offers few clues — until a crisis triggers a race to uncover the true nature of Callie's past, one more intertwined with the elderly man's passing than Trevor could ever have imagined.

In his quest to unravel Natalie and Callie's secrets, Trevor will learn the true meaning of love and forgiveness . . . and that in life, to move forward, we must often return to the place where it all began.

The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Small Great Things and A Spark of Light comes a riveting novel about the choices that alter the course of our lives.

Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She’s on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: Prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband but of a man she last saw fifteen years ago: Wyatt Armstrong.

Dawn, miraculously, survives the crash, but so do all the doubts that have suddenly been raised. She has led a good life. Back in Boston, there is her husband, Brian, their beloved daughter, and her work as a death doula, in which she helps ease the transition between life and death for her clients.

But somewhere in Egypt is Wyatt Armstrong, who works as an archaeologist unearthing ancient burial sites, a career Dawn once studied for but was forced to abandon when life suddenly intervened. And now, when it seems that fate is offering her second chances, she is not as sure of the choice she once made.

After the crash landing, the airline ensures that the survivors are seen by a doctor, then offers transportation to wherever they want to go. The obvious destination is to fly home, but she could take another path: return to the archaeological site she left years before, reconnect with Wyatt and their unresolved history, and maybe even complete her research on The Book of Two Ways—the first known map of the afterlife.

As the story unfolds, Dawn’s two possible futures unspool side by side, as do the secrets and doubts long buried with them. Dawn must confront the questions she’s never truly asked: What does a life well lived look like? When we leave this earth, what do we leave behind? Do we make choices . . . or do our choices make us? And who would you be if you hadn’t turned out to be the person you are right now?

You Want More: Selected Stories of George Singleton by George Singleton

Thirty stories, collected in one volume for the very first time, from one of the South's best known and most acclaimed short story writers.

With his signature darkly acerbic and sharp-witted humor, George Singleton has built a reputation as one of the most astute and wise observers of the South. Now Tom Franklin introduces this master of the form with a compilation of acclaimed and prize-winning short fiction spanning twenty years and eight collections, including stories originally published in outlets like the Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, Playboy, the Georgia Review, the Southern Review, and many more. A lovelorn and chatty euthanasia vet arrives at a couples’ house to put down their dog, Probate; a father-to-be searches his workplace—a bar—for a replacement sonogram after recording an episode of Bonanza over the original; an unlikely romance sparks between a librarian and a professional bowler while they compete to win an RV; a father takes his son to visit the many ex-girlfriends that could have been his mother.

These stories bear the influence of Flannery O’Connor and Raymond Carver, at other times Lewis Nordan and Donald Barthelme, and touch on the mysteries of childhood, the complexities of human relationships, and the absurdity of everyday life, its inexorable defeats and small triumphs. Assembled here for the very first time, You Want More showcases the body of work, hilarious and incisive, that has cemented George Singleton’s place among the South’s greatest living writers.

Piranesi by Susanna Clark - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

From the New York Times bestselling author of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, an intoxicating, hypnotic new novel set in a dreamlike alternative reality.

Piranesi's house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. But Piranesi is not afraid; he understands the tides as he understands the pattern of the labyrinth itself. He lives to explore the house.

There is one other person in the house-a man called The Other, who visits Piranesi twice a week and asks for help with research into A Great and Secret Knowledge. But as Piranesi explores, evidence emerges of another person, and a terrible truth begins to unravel, revealing a world beyond the one Piranesi has always known.

For readers of Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane and fans of Madeline Miller's Circe, Piranesi introduces an astonishing new world, an infinite labyrinth, full of startling images and surreal beauty, haunted by the tides and the clouds.

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life.

Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans.

I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world.

At least, that’s what the world expects me to do. Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me like one more evil thing that’s crawled out of the drains. Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am. The school itself certainly does.

But the Scholomance isn’t getting what it wants from me. And neither is Orion Lake. I may not be anyone’s idea of the shining hero, but I’m going to make it out of this place alive, and I’m not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either.

Although I’m giving serious consideration to just one.

With flawless mastery, Naomi Novik creates a heroine for the ages—a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come.

Monogamy by Sue Miller - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

A brilliantly insightful novel, engrossing and haunting, about marriage, love, family, happiness and sorrow, from New York Times bestselling author Sue Miller.

Graham and Annie have been married for nearly thirty years. A golden couple, their seemingly effortless devotion has long been the envy of their circle of friends and acquaintances.

Graham is a bookseller, a big, gregarious man with large appetites—curious, eager to please, a lover of life, and the convivial host of frequent, lively parties at his and Annie’s comfortable house in Cambridge. Annie, more reserved and introspective, is a photographer. She is about to have her first gallery show after a six-year lull and is worried that the best years of her career may be behind her. They have two adult children; Lucas, Graham’s son with his first wife, Frieda, works in New York. Annie and Graham’s daughter, Sarah, lives in San Francisco. Though Frieda is an integral part of this far-flung, loving family, Annie feels confident in the knowledge that she is Graham’s last and greatest love.

When Graham suddenly dies—this man whose enormous presence has seemed to dominate their lives together—Annie is lost. What is the point of going on, she wonders, without him?

Then, while she is still mourning him intensely, she discovers that Graham had been unfaithful to her; and she spirals into darkness, wondering if she ever truly knew the man who loved her.

A Better Man: A (Mostly Serious) Letter to My Son by Michael Ian Black - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

A poignant look at boyhood, in the form of a heartfelt letter from comedian Michael Ian Black to his teenage son before he leaves for college, and a radical plea for rethinking masculinity and teaching young men to give and receive love.

In a world in which the word masculinity now often goes hand in hand with toxic, comedian, actor, and father Michael Ian Black offers up a way forward for boys, men, and anyone who loves them. Part memoir, part advice book, and written as a heartfelt letter to his college-bound son, A Better Manreveals Black’s own complicated relationship with his father, explores the damage and rising violence caused by the expectations placed on boys to “man up,” and searches for the best way to help young men be part of the solution, not the problem. “If we cannot allow ourselves vulnerability,” he writes, “how are we supposed to experience wonder, fear, tenderness?”

Honest, funny, and hopeful, Black skillfully navigates the complex gender issues of our time and delivers a poignant answer to an urgent question: How can we be, and raise, better men?

Rage by Bob Woodward

An unprecedented and intimate tour de force of original reporting on the Trump presidency from Bob Woodward.

Rage goes behind the scenes like never before, with stunning new details about early national security decisions and operations and Trump’s moves as he faces a global pandemic, economic disaster and racial unrest.

Woodward, the #1 internationally bestselling author of 13 #1 bestsellers, including Fear: Trump in the White House, shows Trump up close in his entirety before the 2020 presidential election.

President Trump has said publicly that Woodward has interviewed him. What is not known is that Trump provided Woodward a window into his mind through a series of exclusive interviews.

At key decision points, Rage shows how Trump’s responses to the crises of 2020 were rooted in the instincts, habits and style he developed during his first three years as president.

Rage draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand witnesses, as well as participants’ notes, emails, diaries, calendars and confidential documents.

Woodward obtained 25 personal letters exchanged between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that have not been public before. Kim describes the bond between the two leaders as out of a “fantasy film,” as the two leaders engage in an extraordinary diplomatic minuet.

Rage will be the foundational account of the Trump presidency, its turmoil, contradictions and risks. It is an essential document for any voter seeking an accurate inside view of the Trump years—volatile and vivid.

The Butterfly Girl by Rene Denfeld

The Butterfly Girl is another solid entry in the Child Finder series. Slowly a few memories come back and with those clues she starts in earnest to try and locate her sister turning down other cases until she does. While investigating the few clues she has, she begins to interact with some of the street kids – homeless children trying to survive on the streets - and becomes involved with a police case of a serial killer of young girls who are prostitutes. To Tell You the Truth by Gilly Macmillan

Lucy Harper is a very famous and rich novelist who writes mysteries starring the fictional DS Eliza Grey. Lucy is married to Dan Harper, who was also an aspiring writer when they first met, but who now acts solely as Lucy’s asst. From the beginning we know Lucy has a secret she is hiding from most of her fans and her neighbors. She was 9 years old when she snuck out of the house and went into the woods with her 3 yo little brother, Teddy, to see the bonfire and the druids celebrating the solstice. She returned home but he did not and she swore over and over that she didn’t know what happened to him. But, she was a child and people didn’t believe her and so she started making up stories she thought they wanted to hear and leaving out things that she thought would get her into trouble. Eventually she did not know what was true and what wasn’t so she changed her name and put her vivid imagination to good use writing fiction. She and her husband seemed to be living the good life. Then her life suddenly becomes totally unhinged when her husband buys a house without her permission close to where she used to live. She soon discovers he has been hiding many secrets from her and was secretly very jealous of her success. Then Dan vanishes. Lucy soon finds herself the focus of yet another police investigation into what has happened to Dan. The atmosphere in this novel is very haunting and sad. How can we know if what Lucy is telling us is the truth when she doesn’t know herself? Who is her mysterious friend Eliza? What was Dan up to, behind her back? These are all questions that swirl around the main theme of the story, which is what happened to Teddy years ago and was Lucy to blame. To Tell You the Truth is psychological fiction at its best. A psychologist could have a field day with how Lucy was treated as a child by the police, her parents, and her neighbors, and how it ended up affecting what she did and how she acted as an adult. You won’t want to miss this one.

Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

Maggie Holt was the central character of the bestselling non-fiction book her father wrote about their 14 days living in the supposedly haunted Baneberry Hall. Maggie has always hated the book and the notoriety that came from it. She was only 5 when they lived there and she remembers nothing about the time. But since the book was essentially about her she is constantly bombarded with questions and made fun of by non-believers. All that she really knows is that her father swore the house was haunted and that everything he wrote was true and that on his deathbed he begged Maggie never to return to the house. Since Maggie doesn’t believe in ghosts, and since her mother has refused to ever discuss what happened there. Maggie decides she must return to the house to find out for herself what caused them to run from the house twenty years ago with only the clothes on their backs, never to return. If like Maggie you don’t believe in ghosts and think there is a rational explanation for everything you will love trying to figure out what that explanation is. As you hear Maggie’s father read his book and at the same time follow what is now happening to Maggie and what is going on at Baneberry Hall you may begin to believe that the only explanation is that Baneberry Hall is truly haunted. The brilliant plotting was instrumental in making this one of the creepiest and most believable ghost stories I have ever read and the ending was beyond amazing. If reading this doesn’t put you in another place and time to escape what is going on in the real world then nothing ever will.

One by One by Ruth Ware

Robert Pobi has written another heart stopping, adrenaline fueled thriller. Dr. Lucas Page once again is talked into helping the FBI – this time to see who is setting off bombs and killing hundreds of people all over NYC. Once again Lucas uses his uncanny memory and special math skills as he tries to analyze data, numbers, and all sorts of unrelated facts about the bombings and the victims to come up with some kind of pattern to figure out who is behind the bombings. Once again he is obnoxious to his co-workers and anyone who he thinks is beneath his intelligence (which means almost everyone) and once again he puts himself in unbelievable danger. There is lots of bloodshed and the killing of many innocent people, there is lots of black humor, there is non-stop action and there is just the slightest softening of Lucas Page as a person. Lots of books are listed as thrillers but few fill the bill as well as Under Pressure does.

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg

If you are a fan of Scandinavian Noir as I am you will love this twisty, dark police procedural set in Denmark, which was an Indie Next pick in hardcover. The young downstairs tenant, Julie Stender, is found brutally murdered by the second floor tenant and he ends up in hospital because of a heart attack. The owner Estelle de Laurenti who lives on the third floor has a weird connection to the murder – an unpublished novel she is working on seems to have been the basis for the murder and the way it was carried out. But, Estelle is too old and too feeble to have been able to carry out the gruesome murder. This is a character driven mystery that will keep you guessing to the end. I can’t wait for the rest of the books in the series to be translated into English.

The Lost Man by Jane Harper

Jane Harper has created yet another masterpiece, this one a standalone set in the outback region of Queensland Australia. It is a beautifully written character driven novel where the extreme hardship of living and surviving in the outback is one of the major characters. It is the story of the Bright brothers told from the perspective of Nathan – the oldest of the three – as he tries to make sense of how his middle brother, Cameron, ended up alone in the middle of the desert dead of dehydration when he had a well-stocked and working car not far away. Was it something sinister or was it suicide as the authorities seem to believe. If suicide, what might have driven this charismatic well liked young man with a wife and two young daughters to take his life. The Lost Man is a story of family dynamics, of abuse and of lots of what ifs. The descriptions of the scenery and life in the outback would be enough alone to keep up your interest, but added to that is a cast of characters who you feel like you know intimately by the end of the book. A cast of characters who all have secrets and who make you wonder did Cameron kill himself or did one of them do the unspeakable.

This thriller comes out of the gate at top speed. The mother is told her daughter and her daughter’s fiancée were killed in a plane crash and the mother decides she has to learn what her daughter’s life was like for the past two years. Before She Was Helen by Caroline B. Cooney -- SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

Before She Was Helen was a fun, quirky, almost slapstick story about senior citizens living in a retirement community in SC and what happens when Helen does a good deed and goes into a neighbor’s condo to make sure he is all right. When a dead body turns up a few days later Helen really has problems as she found something strange during her search for her neighbor and she is afraid that she will finally have to reveal the truth about who she was before she was Helen. While the book seems to be light and frivolous and is quick read there are some serious issues that haunt Helen. After all things just weren’t done the same way in the 50’s when Helen was a teenager. Helen has a lot of secrets and she wants to keep them. I really loved Helen’s grit and determination and the way she interacted with her neighbors and couldn’t wait to see if Helen could stay Helen

Dear Justyce by Nic Stone

Quan has been in and out of prison since he was 13. Now, at 18, he's been in prison for over a year. To keep his sanity, he writes letters to his friend Justyce, who gave him the idea with his own letters to Martin Luther King, Jr. Told through a series of flashbacks and letters alternating with the current story, readers will see Quan's life and the decisions he and others have made in his life that have affected him and led to his incarceration. The Bridge by Bill Konigsberg

This book needs to be shared. It's about two teens who both (separately) go to the George Washington Bridge with the intention of jumping. Once they're both there and notice each other, there are four possible outcomes: Tillie jumps and Aaron doesn't; Aaron jumps and Tillie doesn't; they both jump; or neither jumps. This book covers all four scenarios, and it destroyed me all four times. Konigsberg's intention is to show what could happen: If you feel like jumping but don't, these are the things that might happen that are better than right now. If you do jump, these are the people who will be affected and how it will make them feel. Having come out the other side of a situation like this, it was hard but powerful for me to read the could-have-beens; I can only hope it could be just as powerful for anyone contemplating suicide, to make them see what they're leaving behind.

Sophie LeFevre's husband was sent off to fight in World War I, leaving her with only a portrait he'd painted of her, a portrait that drew the eye of the Kommandant. 90 years later, that portrait, titled The Girl You Left Behind, hangs in Liv Halston's house, a wedding gift from her late husband. When descendants of the artist claim ownership of the painting and demand restitution, Liv's life becomes a battle, both legal and emotional, as she fights to keep Sophie's portrait and find out everything she can about Sophie herself and what happened to her, feeling somehow as though it can help Liv figure out where her own life is going. Unbeknownst to most of the world, though, the Prophets foretold this Age of Darkness, but also gave hope that a Last Prophet would come along and possibly stop it. Now five young adults from different backgrounds, some Graced and some not, each with his or her own agenda, must play their parts and make or break the world. When Ernt Allbright, a Vietnam War veteran with raging PTSD, decides to move his family to Alaska, thirteen-year-old Leni and her mother, Cora, don't resist - if it will make him happy again, it will be worth it. Very quickly, however, they learn that the greatest danger won't be the harsh Alaskan winters outside their door, but the abuse within. The Great Alone is fascinating and beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. It's a story of strength of spirit and survival against all odds. A powerful look into the horrors of codependency and toxic love told against the backdrop of a wild 1960's Alaska, The Great Alone is unforgettable. It's a book of love, in all of its forms - beautiful, toxic, romantic, platonic, familial. It's about the strength of a community and the love between a mother and a daughter, and it explores falling in love when you aren't sure that you know what real love is. It made me smile, made me angry, and made me think - sometimes all at once.

The Deepest South of All: True Stories from Natchez, Mississippi by Richard Grant

A truism of small Southern towns is that if you have money or family connections, you can be 'eccentric.' Otherwise, you’re a crazy nutjob. By that definition, or any definition, Natchez, Mississippi, has been eccentric for over two centuries. In his new book The Deepest South of All, author Richard Grant delves into the past and present of Natchez and recounts and often analyzes fascinating stories that sound like they come from Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Even though I had never before heard most of these tales, I believe them because I lived in Natchez from age four until I graduated from high school. I even danced the polka in the spring Pilgrimage one year despite the fact that neither of my grandmothers was born or raised in Natchez. In the interest of full disclosure, some of Chapter 15 is devoted to the antebellum mansion that my family briefly owned. My father, a real estate developer, bought the infamous and aptly named 'Goat Castle' (and its fifty acres), completed the demolition begun by fifty years of human neglect and goat and chicken infestation, built a subdivision, and named one of the streets for the 'Wild Man of Goat Castle' who killed his neighbor and got away with murder. I heartily recommend you read this well-written and very entertaining book. If you don’t believe these eccentricities, visit Natchez during spring or fall Pilgrimage and see for yourself.

WOW! I think the last few times I have read Karin's new books I think they are the best yet. This book is no exception to that pattern. The plot of an epidemic is incredibly real and the continued unfolding of Will & Sara's relationship during extreme duress is spellbinding. The focus on things, like domestic terrorism, that are sometimes swept under the rug are front and center in this book. I have a hard time imagining how much research was involved to reach the level of detail in so any complex medical and scientific situations in this book. The pace is fast and if you skip a page you will miss something important. There are perfect examples of evil hiding in plain sight, but also wonderful examples of sacrifice and heroism. Don't miss this journey with Will & Sara.

Four young teenage girls have gone missing from this sleepy, seaside village near Yorkshire, and Alex, an investigative reporter, has traveled there to see if she can determine what happened to them. Once there, she is met with little cooperation and much hostility. But, Alex has secrets of her own. And there are gaps in her memory,,,many things fade in and out as she tries to remember her own past. As she begins to unravel these mysteries, she runs the risk of exposing her true self. A complex plot soon reveals blackmail and murder, leaving too many lives shattered and broken; and Alex is afraid she might be the cause. When many twists and turns converge into its emotionally charged climax, Alex is left to sort out who she really is.
