LOOKING BACK | CORONATION MEMORIES

Back to the summer of 1953 |
|
This week’s archive photographs take us back to the summer of 1953, when Bath’s streets and public spaces were, like those of towns and cities throughout the country, decorated for the coronation of Elizabeth II on 2 June. The first two show the view down Milsom Street and the view along Westgate Street, with the Grand Pump Room Hotel on the left. The third shows the floral display in Parade Gardens.

Local glove and accessory manufacturer Dents has royal connections
The ceremonial presentation of a glove at a coronation can be traced back to the enthronement of Richard II at Westminster Abbey in 1337.
At the coronation of a British monarch, the Sovereign's right hand coronation glove is removed and the coronation ring is put on their finger. The gauntlet shaped glove is made from white kid leather, with an embroidered gauntlet covering in raised gold purl wire in shapes of sprigged sequins, acorns, roses and shamrocks and lined with crimson coloured silk. The crown and E II R are embroidered on the centre back of the glove.
H. M. Queen Elizabeth II coronation glove and her father King George VI coronation glove were both made by local glove and accessory manufacturer Dents, in Warminster. Dents makes gloves and accessories for the world's finest stores in over 30 countries as well as for royalty, theatre, TV and film.

4 Jubilee Tea Party Recipes |

|
|
Coronation Chicken Sandwiches (makes 6 whole sandwiches, enough to serve 12 people as part of an afternoon tea)
Combine 6 tbsp high-quality mayonnaise with 2-3 tsp mild curry powder, 2 tbsp mango chutney, 2 tbsp sultanas and ½ tsp ground cinnamon. Add 500g shredded roast chicken to the mix, stir well to coat in the sauce and season to taste. Generously butter 12 slices of white bread (oh of course, it has to be white bread!). Divide the mixture across 6 slices of bread and top with a crisp lettuce leaf and the remaining bread slices. Remove the crusts and slice each sandwich into triangles or fingers.

Mini Roast Beef Yorkshire Puddings with Horseradish Cream (makes 12)
Preheat the oven to 230°C/gas mark 8 and place a 12-hole mini muffin tray in the oven to heat up. Meanwhile, gently combine 1 egg with 85g plain flour and 85ml 50/50 milk/water mixture until you have a smooth batter (the batter can be made up to 8 hours in advance and refrigerated). Remove the hot muffin tray from the oven, drizzle each hole with a little vegetable oil and slide the tray back into the oven until the oil is smoking hot. Carefully pour the batter into each hole, slide back into the oven and cook for around 8-10 minutes or until the puddings have browned on top, and puffed up. Allow the puddings to cool on a rack while you make the filling: combine 300ml full fat crème fraîche with 2-3 tbsp horseradish sauce. Season well and add a splash of lemon juice. Add generous slices of roast beef to each mini Yorkshire Pudding and top with the horseradish cream.

Eton Mess Trifle (serves 12)
To make a speedy strawberry coulis, put 140g hulled, chopped fresh strawberries into a small pan along with 2 tbsp caster sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract and 100ml sweet sherry. Bring to a simmer and allow to bubble for a few minutes until the sugar has dissolved and the strawberries have started to soften. Tip the coulis into a blender or food processor, process until smooth, then sieve into a bowl to remove the strawberry seeds. Leave the coulis to cool. Line the bottom and sides of a large bowl or dish (preferably glass) with 1 small, sliced, strawberry jam-filled Swiss Roll and drizzle with around 4-5 tbsp cooled coulis. Hull and slice around 450g fresh strawberries and place around half of the slices (cut-side facing outwards) on top of the Swiss Roll layer. Softly whip 500ml double cream with 2 tbsp icing sugar and 1 tsp vanilla extract. Fold 150ml full fat natural yoghurt into the cream and ripple the remaining strawberry coulis into the mixture. Tip half of the mixture into the trifle bowl, add more sliced strawberries and several generous handfuls of crushed, ready made meringues. Top with the remaining cream mixture followed by yet more fresh strawberry slices, more crushed meringue and a smattering of flaked almonds. Serve fairly quickly, before the meringues start to dissolve!

English Elderflower Prosecco (makes 8 large glasses)
Peel ½ a large cucumber and slice lengthways. Use a teaspoon to scrape out and discard the seeds before peeling into long, thin ribbons using a vegetable peeler or sharp knife. Fill a large glass jug with ice cubes and top with 180ml English Elderflower Cordial, 300ml tonic water and 1 x 750ml bottle of Prosecco. Add the cucumber ribbons, a spritz of fresh lime juice and a small handful of fresh mint leaves. Swirl with a long spoon and serve immediately in tall glasses. Cheers!

EATING OUT | A SPRING LUNCH
|
|
|
|
Words by Head Chef at Chez Dominique Sam Lewis
A trip to Modern French and European restaurant, Chez Dominique
Picture the scene; it's a warm, late spring afternoon at the end of the working week. The sun is glowing on the Bath stone down through to the Laura Place fountain, and The Holburne Museum in the distance in all its Bridgerton glory. Lunch is booked at the gloriously humble Chez Dominique.
I'd recommend a crisp, cold glass of Champagne Testulat Carte d’Or Brut Blanc de Noirs and some warm Bertinet sourdough lavished with salted French butter whilst you peruse the menu. A personal favourite of mine is the scallops, curried lentils, cauliflower purée and hazelnut dukkah; fresh, plump and sweet scallops sent up from the restaurant's Fisherman Burt in Dorset, seared, seasoned, and finished with a squeeze of lemon. Paired with a glass of Viognier, domaine Mas Bahourat 2019, it blends well with the Scallops but also the creamy and curry notes.
Moving on to your mains. I suggests the roasted cod: a big hunk of perfectly flakey Cod sat on buttery samphire with ripe, slightly warmed Heritage tomatoes, shallots, olives and capers muddled with a piquant Cabernet Sauvignon vinaigrette and lashings of lemon beurre blanc.
Then on to dessert: there is always room for a good pud. Nothing on the Chez Dominique menu screams sunshine more than the passion fruit meringue tart served with coconut Chantilly cream and passion fruit purée. A glass of Muscat de Frontignan, Chateau de Stony 2018 would lend itself perfectly with the sharp passion fruit and meringue.
To book your table at Chez Dominique, visit the Chez Dominique website: chezdominique.co.uk. Alternatively, you can email eat@chezdominique.co.uk, or call 01225 463482.

Electric Bear celebrates the Jubilee with its Treetops English Pale Ale
Aptly named Treetops, this contemporary English Pale Ale was lovingly made by a talented craft beer team to celebrate The Queen's Jubilee and to be enjoyed – whilst supporting her Majesty's tree planting project at the same time.
Electric Bear will donate 30p for every can sold to The Queen's Green Canopy Fund: a nationwide project to plant trees. Every 33.3 cans will raise £10, which is enough to plant one tree (for the Jubilee) in the UK.
In the words of the Electric Bear Brewing Co, "Drink beer and plant some trees". Not a bad idea, we think. Happy Jubilee celebrations!

THE MAGAZINE KIOSK | WHY WE LOVE PRINT
|
|
|
|
Curated by Daniel McCabe
The Road Rat overhauls the conventional model of the car magazine. And we stress ‘overhaul’ rather than tinkering around or trying to power it up. It’s less interested in technical detail and performance. The Road Rat instead believes that there’s a load of interesting and untold stories located in both the past and the present, on the road and on the race track. The tenth issue examines Enzo Ferrari’s complex relationship with son Dino and the car that carried his name in place of Ferrari’s, the Dina Berlinetta Speciale. Plus Porsche, IndyCars, Lotus, Giugiaro, Saab and Villeneuve.

Bedivere Arts: 'The Many Lives of Nellie Bly' by Jack Fairey
The Many Lives of Nellie Bly is a new one woman show that tells the outrageous true story of a pioneer of investigative journalism. Her exploits blazed a trail for ambitious women around the world and pushed boundaries nobody knew could be pushed.
From going undercover in an asylum to expose the terrible conditions and prompt legal reform, to heading to the Western Front during World War Two, to racing Jules Verne's fictional Phileas Fogg around the world just to prove it could be done, everything Bly did should have been impossible. But, in her own words: “I've always had the feeling that nothing is impossible if one applies a certain amount of energy in the right direction. If you want to do it, you can do it.”
This show blends intimate storytelling and rooted performance with an original cinematic score and clever multi-purpose staging and design. It explores ideas of ambition and fearlessness and asks the question: who gets to decide who we are? Who gets to decide what we be?
The show – part of the Bath Fringe Festival 2022 line up – will take place on Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May at The Mission Theatre (main auditorium). Doors at 7pm, show at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.50 (£10 concs) and are available from ticketsource.co.uk/bedivere-arts
