The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a time-late sighting of a small boat with armed persons onboard, operating in close proximity to a Coastal Freighter approximately 95 NM northeast of Massawa, Eritrea.
Further information has indicated that the small craft identified themselves as the Eritrean Navy. The Joint Maritime Information Centre (JMIC) reported that the small boat approached two vessels in the same vicinity: a Tanzanian-flagged Cargo Barge and a Honduras-flagged Specialist Craft. Security aboard the Specialist Craft fired three warning shots, prompting the small boat to return fire and identify themselves over VHF radio as the Eritrean Navy. The crew of the Cargo Barge warned the small boat over the radio to stay back and advised that they were armed. The small craft then departed. All vessels and crew are reported safe.
All vessels in the area are advised to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activities to the UKMTO.
