Join us for our first PD workshop in Brisbane/Turrbal land where we will learn how to work collaboratively with people with Autism and Neurodiversity to manage sensory/motor differences and support meaningful participation within their communities.

In this workshop you will:
● Develop a deeper understanding about the various sensory/motor differences of
people with Neurodiversity/Autism.
● Learn how to apply various movement techniques to reduce sensory overload and
overwhelm for people with Neurodiversity.
● Collaborate with people who have lived experience of not using speech to
communicate.

This workshop is for Dance Movement Therapists, Dance Movement Therapy students, Allied Health practitioners, Support Workers and allies of people with Neurodiversity.

This workshop aims to support practitioners, students, and allies interested in working with individuals with Neurodiversity and Autism to meaningfully participate within their communities.

Inspired by Martha R. Leary and Anne Donnelan's influential book "Autism: Sensory Motor Differences and Diversity," the workshop will focus on Chapter 3, "Rethinking Autism," which lays the foundation for further reflective discussion in working with people with Autism and Neurodiveristy.

This workshop will blend experiential learning with practical theory, leveraging Alice’s extensive experience as a speech pathologist and dance therapist working with people with Neurodiversity and Autism. Alice will lead participants through movement explorations grounded in DMT principles and frameworks, aimed at supporting sensory processing in individuals with Autism and Neurodiversity.

Additionally, co-presenters from the Brotherhood of the Wordless—a group who communicate through typing instead of speech—will share their personal experiences of living with Neurodiversity. Their insights will provide workshop members with valuable perspectives to support best practices.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will:

1. understand how devastating the sensory overwhelm is to the ability to cope with the world on every level.

2. understand the effect of sensory overload on movement capabilities for people with Neurodiversity (PWN).

3. Learn new strategies to assist PWN to manage their individual challenges.

Comfortable clothes for movement experiences, a water bottle and your own lunch (cafes nearby).
