When it comes to reading for pleasure, nothing beats snuggling under a blanket, cracking open a brand new hardcover, and getting lost in another world for a couple of hours.
That said, in the last year, I've come to appreciate the convenience of eBooks.
For me, the biggest perk of eBooks is the cost. You can often grab a copy for less than five dollars, making it a great way to sample books (from new authors especially) with minimal financial risk.
Audiobooks are still a bit of a mystery to me, but I plan on doing a deeper dive into this popular "reading" modality soon. Feel free to reply to this email (and/or take the survey below) to weigh in on the audiobook craze.
I also like the environmental benefits of eBooks/audiobooks versus physical books.
Although, there are varying opinions about this. Some say physical books produce fewer greenhouse gases; others say the opposite is true. If you'd like to learn more, be sure to check out these these articles from Eco Bravo (an eco-friendly product company) and Anthropocene (a sustainability science and innovation magazine) for two interesting takes on the matter.
For me–someone who currently reads all her eBooks on a cell phone–splurging on an official eReader makes sense.
After weighing all the popular options currently available (agh! there are so many!), the Kobo Libra 2 has won a place in my heart. Ahem. I hope my hubby reads this newsletter; my birthday is coming up. Not only does this device have 32GB of storage, a physical page-turning feature, and a waterproof shell, it is also audiobook compatible AND cheaper than comparable Kindle products. It also has the distinction of not being designed and marketed by Amazon, which is ideal for anyone who would rather eat live spiders than give a dime to that giant, dastardly corporation. Kobo, on the other hand, is a Canadian enterprise, so for me (a third-generation Canadian), the choice was easy.
What about you? What's your preferred reading format: tree books, eBooks, or audiobooks? Or all three? Let me know in the survey below!
