Solvang Hotel Opens

June 27, 1911

“A new hotel has been completed and ground broken for a school house and church in Solvang, the Danish colony near Los Olivos,” reported the Santa Barbara Independent. “Indications are that from now on the colony, for which there is not yet a nucleus, will show rapid growth.”

Just six months after its founding, a virtual building boom was on in the new town of Solvang. “There are now 65 families on the ground and the present accommodations of the colony are cramped,” stated the article. “There is at present a large crew of carpenters at Solvang and homes are now in course of construction.”

Hotel construction was done under contract with Hans Skytt (left) and his crew.

Located on Gaviota Road (present day Alisal Road) near the intersection with Lompoc Road (Mission Drive), Solvang Hotel was the center of community activity. It served as the local gathering place; mail was delivered by stagecoach running between Los Olivos and Gaviota; it housed a branch of the Santa Barbara County Free Library; and every room was occupied by newly arrived settlers. The hotel was so crowded at times that men would sleep on the dining room floor when no rooms were available.

The landmark building was eventually renamed the Solvang Inn and housed a lively restaurant and bar that was a popular gathering place. A major blaze on January 28, 1967 consumed the building.

In the town's early years, Solvang Hotel provided essential services for the growing community. Today, after three months of COVID-19 related closures, Solvang’s hotels and motels are reopening and again welcoming guests.

We look forward to reopening the museum sometime in July and are working to enhance exhibits while providing a safe and welcoming environment. More information coming soon!

All our best,
