WEEKEND RECIPES | LIFE'S A PEACH!
Words by Melissa Blease
Discover: griddled peaches
According to T S Eliot's J Alfred Prufrock (as in, Eliot's 1915 poem, The Love Song Of...), eating a peach is a symbol of taking a carefree, spontaneous approach to life. But what would Prufrock have made of taking a slightly more technical approach to one of the UK's most popular stone fruits, at their best from roundabout now until the end of September?
Why? Griddling peaches over a high heat intensifies their deep summer sweetness and bring out yet more juiciness.
How? Simple! All you need are firm, ripe peaches and a hot pan. A griddle pan works best (the charred lines add further texture) but any decent, solid frying pan will do. Cut the peaches in half, remove the stone and allow them to sauté in the hot pan (cut side down only) for around 2-3 minutes until caramelised and golden. If you're aiming for a sweet treat, sprinkle the peaches with a bit of brown sugar before frying; for savoury, use black pepper instead.
Hang on – savoury peaches? As you'd expect, griddled peaches are delicious served with whipped cream, ice cream or yoghurt. But the saltiness of cheese or charcuterie triples the sweetness of the peaches. Try a combination of griddled peaches, slivers of prosciutto, chunks of blue cheese and a handful of lightly dressed leaves, and you're in for a real treat. Or, griddled peaches, burrata, pistachios and honey. Or what about griddled peaches, feta cheese and mint? Life's a peach indeed!

BOYS! BOYS! BOYS! claims to be the world's first fine art photography magazine dedicated to queer and gay photography. I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s an undeniably impressive series which stretches to six issues with this latest release. Each volume is clad in a minimalist single colour jacket and runs to a substantial 160 pages to showcase the work of ten contemporary photographers. Not only is BOYS! BOYS! BOYS! highly imaginative for the genre but there’s plenty of wicked humour too which goes a good way to explaining its popularity – it nearly always sells out with us, so if queer fine art photography is your thing, grab this burgundy beauty before it’s gone. | £20

CHOIR CONCERT | MENDELSOHN'S ELIJAH
Bath Bach Choir performs Mendelsohn's Elijah
The choir is delighted to be bringing Mendelssohn’s much-loved oratorio Elijah back to Bath Abbey for its summer concert
It had taken Mendelssohn over a decade to finish the oratorio having worked long and hard on the libretto. As is usual with such works, it has a sacred subject but is not intended for inclusion in church services. It is scored for solo voices, choir and orchestra. The narration of the biblical story of the Old Testament prophet Elijah is in the form of recitatives sung by the soloists interspersed with the choir singing various airs and choruses; it is a work full of vitality. Mendelssohn was undoubtedly influenced by both Bach and Handel, adding his own enthusiastic and dramatic style that captures the audience’s interest from the opening to the final chorus.
Bath Bach Choir is thrilled that baritone Matthew Brook will be singing the part of Elijah. With an outstanding reputation for his performances of the music of Bach and Handel in particular, he is currently much in demand all over the world. The choir will be accompanied by Southern Sinfonia, one of the most distinctive orchestral ensembles in the south of England, with Marcus Sealy playing organ continuo.

The series was released on Netflix this week and is proving to be the most unpredictable season yet. As the rain is forecasted to roll in this weekend, the dark, weird, and wild show is sure to keep you busy if you're stuck inside.
Creator Charlier Brooker told Tudum: "I've always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people- and myself- or else what's the point? It should be a series that can't be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself"

A unique collaboration between the Dyson Institute and Bath Rugby |
Since 2014, Dyson has been in a dynamic partnership with Bath Rugby, driven by a shared emphasis on resilience, and relentless pursuit of excellence, all while nurturing young talent. This collaboration showcases the convergence of two seemingly different fields and sheds light on the incredible possibilities that arise when engineering principles meet the world of professional sports.
Last May, Will Muir, Bath Rugby wing, spent the day at the Dyson campus in Malmesbury, where he had the opportunity to engage with Dyson Undergraduate Engineers. An interesting fact about Muir is that he studied engineering before embarking on his successful rugby career. Recognising the unique synergy between his two passions, the Dyson Institute seized the opportunity to combine Muir's interests and equip him with engineering insights to gain a competitive edge on the rugby field.
