Boosting literacy rates is common ground for ADPP Angola and the Angolan Ministry of Education. At a ceremony to mark the signing of an agreement between the National Directorate for Youth and Adult Education (DNEJA) and ADPP on Tuesday, March 19, to boost functional literacy in Angola, the Secretary of State for Pre-School and Primary Education, Pacheco Francisco, highlighted the urgency of tackling illiteracy and called for increased efforts from businesses and experts to help address this challenge. The agreement, signed by DNEJA Director Evaristo João Pedro and ADPP President Rikke Viholm, will provide institutional and technical support for ADPP’s youth and adult education projects. Representatives from the Ministry of Education, MASFAMU, and partners attended the event.

Fully informed and aware of their rights!
Part of the Community Project on HIV/AIDS and TB in Benguela and Zaire is aimed at preventing HIV/AIDS and other STIs among adolescent girls and young women. Weekly sessions are aimed at providing information and a space to discuss sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as providing access to testing and linking girls to health services where relevant. In March, certificates were awarded to girls who actively participated in the full Bancadas (Girls’ Club) program and received the minimum service package offered by the project. The event celebrated their involvement and commitment to making active choices about their sexual and reproductive health.

Celebrating International Women's day |
|
On March 8th, International Women's Day was celebrated across all our projects, honouring the role of women in society in general, and specifically the contributions of women project leaders, participants, students, and community members. Many women in the project Support for Angolan Women Farmers in Cuanza Sul had a special celebration as they succeeded in opening their own bank account, part of a longer process which started with getting ID cards.

Improving Food and Nutritional Security
Improving Food and Nutritional Security is a project that supports more than 1500 vulnerable families in Cunene. Drought is the main problem, so the project promotes the cultivation of crops adapted to unpredictable rainfall, with an emphasis on cassava and sweet potatoes; strengthens women’s sales and marketing capacity; and provides inspiration through cooking demonstrations to improve decision-making related to dietary diversification. The promotion of horticulture along the Cunene, Cuvelai, and Calonga rivers, and the Calueque canal, is providing valuable opportunities for the families, who formed Local Producers Associations, and subsequently nine legally recognised agricultural cooperatives with business prospects that help develop the communities. The project presented an update of results this month at Ombadja Municipal Administration.

This 52-metre dam on the River Bero in Chipeio, in the east of Gambos Municipality, is the largest dam built to date by ADPP Angola as part of the Integrated Development Project in Huíla and Namibe. Other components that improve access to water include a renovated well, and a solar-powered water pump that facilitates the drawing of water for both human and animal consumption, as well as for irrigation.

Farmers Field Schools expanding |
|
|
|
Integrated Development in Kanienguelele, Benguela, includes improvements in agricultural production as a key component. The project organised training this month for Farmer Field School members on field hygiene and sanitation; discussed the recent corn harvest that produced 407 kg of corn; and delivered 500g of onion seeds to be sowed next month, once the field have been prepared. 22 women and 20 men attended the session. Four new members joined the Farmer Field School, bringing the total to 56. This is a very positive development, and indicates the value attached to being a member.
