What's happening at Fitzroy Learning Network!

Welcome to our new newsletter.
A monthly email to update you on what has been happening at Fitzroy Learning Network.

With the unexpected changes of recent months we have had to pull away from classes at FLN, but it doesn’t mean the learning has stopped!

English Classes

Our teachers have been busily working to produce learning resources that are sent out to students for them to work on at home. The teachers have been calling the students every week to help them with any questions and have a nice chat to make sure all is well. After completing the work, the students send it back for correction, which is duly completed by the teachers.

While it is quite the change from our normal operations, we are very pleased to say that it is working quite successfully. Everyone involved has worked hard to adapt to our new teaching and learning environment.

FLN Virtual Knitters

FLN has started up a new virtual class for isolation knitting. Our ACFE Coordinator Christine gives us an overview:

The knitting classes started a few weeks ago via Zoom. I am really enjoying it, as I have wanted to learn to knit for a while. My mum tried to teach me to knit years ago, but I always found that my tension was too tight. So I didn’t really enjoy it. Denise is experienced knitter who so far has taught us how to cast on knit and purl. This has included some handouts, a YouTube link, and further explanation and demonstration by Denise.

When: Friday mornings 10am for 30-45 minutes

Cost: Free

FLN provides: yarn, needles, instructions and patterns, as well as a personalised session on Zoom before the class so that you understand how to use this.

You will need: a phone/ tablet /laptop that can download Zoom and access the internet.

To join: contact or call 9417 2897

FLN Youth

Our youth programs have also moved online!
Sewing Club facilitators Christobel and Sasha have teamed up with the drum to provide an awesome weekly Craft Club session with take home packs for girls in Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond. This week they made origami together, and some of the girls have made a start on an embroidery project.

The Video Club team, supported by facilitator Joseph, have collaborated on a short film for entry into a local contest. The whole thing was made using smart phones and Zoom! Check it out HERE

Support Services

Our Support Service has continued to run during our temporary absence from the office due to COVID-19. Services have been provided over the phone and we continue to stay committed to supporting new migrant members of the Fitzroy Community to develop skills, access services and become sustainable in their new homes.

Appointments can be organised by calling 9417 2897.

It is with great sadness that we bid our Volunteer Coordinator Alysia farewell. We wish her all the best as she pursues a new career. We warmly welcome Ruby into the role.

Our volunteer program has continued to thrive during changes to our operations. Over 30 volunteers attended our recent online volunteer training night focused on responding to family violence issues.

Our incredible team of volunteers has remained engaged and committed to return to support FLN when our doors re-open. We can't wait to have them back as restrictions ease!
