Message from the chair
On October 26, 2023, we celebrated with staff Chancellors Award Winners and our outstanding Professional staff Award winner prior to the University Celebration of Academic Excellence. Our “green room” pre-reception was a great moment to not only celebrate the individual but also the overarching contribution of staff to the University at Buffalo's mission. One of the award conferees said to me that she understood the significance and symbolism of receiving her Chancellor's Award on behalf of all those that she worked with now and those she had worked with. Not everyone is recognized in this way, but the success of the university is surely based on the contributions of those we celebrate and those that support and work with our stars.
As I look out my office window, I can see the leaves falling from the trees. Soon temperatures will drop, and it won't be long before winter arrives. Seasons change, culture changes, and our lives evolve. One thing that never changes is the importance that staff plays in shared governance at this university and in the SUNY system. A couple of weeks back I attended the SUNY statewide faculty Senate plenary at Geneseo college. Many things were discussed that weekend including topics such as academic freedom, the concern about the budgets of the smaller comprehensive and two-year colleges, and the influx of more and more micro credential programs. Early on in the weekend Chancellor King spoke about the importance of involving shared governance in plotting the strategies for the SUNY system and for planning at the campus level. Our University at Buffalo senators were in the midst of discussion and the creation of resolutions around some of those topics. I was proud to watch them, listen to them and increase my understanding on how our campus shared governance culture intertwines with systemwide shared governance.
Wherever you are in your workday or work week understand how important you are to making UB move closer to its goals and SUNY’s goals. We may not all receive the recognition for our work that we’d like, but often, on days like today I realize that my career here has been very rewarding and that one thousand tiny improvements and positive gestures from each of us towards those goals makes a us part of the story of this place and the continuum of UB forever.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
Don Erb, Chairman UB Professional Staff Senate
