The European Union and China play a vital role in achieving global climate neutrality due to their large greenhouse emissions, economic power, influence on international trade, and strong competitive position in low-carbon technology industries. Yet, both regions face tremendous challenges in achieving their climate targets.

EU-CHINA BRIDGE is a project co-funded by the European Union and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China that will support the transition to a climate-neutral and resilient society in both regions.

The project will advance knowledge on technology innovations and roadmaps for decarbonizing energy-intensive industries, co-create innovative modeling frameworks by combining cutting-edge-bottom-up and integrated assessment models, quantify net-zero sustainable pathways, and develop the most updated and comprehensive emissions data.

The first in-person General Assembly of the project took place on 28-29 October 2024 at Shandong University, Weihai, China. The event was attended by over 20 project delegates from the EU and China who had the chance to meet in person for the first time. The first session opened with a warm welcome from the meeting organizer, Prof. Xu Zhao (Shandong University), and continued with introductory remarks and project updates from Prof. Da Yan (Tsingua University) and Dr. Chun Xia (Wuppertal Institute), representing the progress from China and the EU respectively.

The Integrated Model Development workshop was held on the afternoon of 29 October 2024 at Shandong University, Weihai, in the context of the first in-person General Assembly of the project. The aim of the workshop was to familiarise all project partners with the modelling frameworks used in EU-CHINA BRIDGE and provide a first introduction to these tools to interested students of Shandong University.

On October 31, 2024, Jiaxing, China, the China Academy of Social Science, the Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Tsinghua University, and the EU-CHINA BRIDGE team hosted a pivotal gathering of experts, policymakers, and industry leaders at the EU-China Workshop on Steel Decarbonization. This hybrid event brought together experts from Europe and China, exploring paths to decarbonize one of the most energy-intensive sectors in the world.

Decarbonizing energy-intensive industries is one of the major challenges of our time. Innovative approaches and international cooperation are needed to make progress in this area. This is where the EU-CHINA BRIDGE project comes in, promoting dialogue and collaboration between European and Chinese researchers. Through three co-creation cycles, the project promotes dialogue between researchers, policy makers and industry representatives. These interdisciplinary exchange formats provide a platform for discussing and refining research results, ensuring that the developed strategies are not only theoretically feasible, but also practically relevant and implementable.

To achieve the targets of the Paris Agreement, a broad range of socioeconomic sectors must drastically reduce emissions. Models are commonly used to project the development of such sectors and to the assess the mitigation potential and outcomes of national and international policies. Given the strong interdependencies between sectors and countries, relying on a single model for designing mitigation pathways would be insufficient. Instead, an integrated modeling framework is recommended, combining models from various disciplines to provide a comprehensive view of the interactions between environmental, economic, and social systems. The EU-China Bridge project focuses on developing and enhancing modeling frameworks to support net-zero emissions pathways in the EU and China. This report provides an overview of the key modelling frameworks being used in Europe and China to support policy makers and how they can be further improved upon to. The report highlights key elements of the model themselves and lays the groundwork for further development of them to improve their accuracy and utility.

By March 2025, the EU-CHINA BRIDGE project will unveil two comprehensive technology inventories, highlighting promising low-emission options for decarbonizing the steel and chemical industries.

During February and March 2025, interactive workshops will bring together EU stakeholders to co-create strategies for upscaling pathways for chemical recycling and hydrogen use in steelmaking.
