No, the masthead cormorant pictured last week was not auditioning for a starring role in The Karate Kid (thanks, Steven) but was in fact drying his wings probably post hunting. Debra offered as succinct an explanation as I read: "The cormorant’s feathers are not waterproof. They do not have oil glands to cover their feathers so they are less buoyant and can dive for food. Because their feathers get wet they have to spread out their wings and hold the pose to air dry. They especially like to do this in the sunlight."
And who can blame them?
Some are also apparently daredevils! Angela shared this: "Last week while vacationing in Niagara Falls, Ontario, my family and I watched the cormorants diving for fish, etc in the Niagara River above and below the falls. One was even daring, it was floating in the water above Horseshoe Fall and went right over the falls!!!! All of us and the rest of the crowd all ooh'd, ahh'd, and gasped!!! What a ride that must have been!"
No barrel apparently.
It's not yet July so we have one more trivia question for June! When Tasha got to McCall's Dam, her first question was "so where's the dam?" I'll ask YOU the same thing.
Enter each week to increase your chances of a fabulous prize at the end of the month when I'll draw one entry from all correct answers received during the month.
