Most students have dabbled in their own video editing whether that’s TikTok or that music video you made with your friends in 2015. However, Allison Barnett (‘26) took those skills to a whole new level this summer. Allison interned with CashmanKatz, a Connecticut based integrated marketing & advertising agency with over 30 years of experience, as a production intern. She worked alongside the head of video production diving into brainstorming sessions, editing videos, and filming. Allison even “...attended live shoots where [she] assisted in set-up and break down of equipment and learning what it takes to successful capture what is needed for the client.”
While being put into such a high energy and involved role can be intimidating, Allison shared that her experiences at UConn prepared her for these challenges: “The many business classes I have taken have given me insight on how to act during your internship, what to wear, and how to take the most away from it...just being exposed to how to communicate with others at a company and giving opportunities to connect with peers has helped me make the most connections at my internship.” Beyond her experience within the classroom, Allison was a part of The Business Connections Learning Community (BCLC) her freshmen year “which jump started my career in the School of Business.” She is also an active member of Marketing Society as well as working for the Student Union Event Services and the Athletics Department, sharpening her administrative and videography skills.
The best way to find an internship? “Create a list of types of industries and companies within those target industries. Research companies near you that fit these target industries and email them. Even if you can't find places to apply send a cold email. That's how I got my internship! I recommend advertisement agencies if you are unsure of a specific area of interest, they have everything,” Allison shared. A great place to start is the Marketing Internship and Job Posting List. It’s so important to put yourself out there, as Allison did. She reiterates the importance of having an internship as “It gives real world experience in a professional and personal level that you can't learn in a classroom.” The skills and hands-on collaborative experience that Allison had this summer is sure to take her far, on campus and beyond.
