This month we’re focusing on children in the Bible. And throughout scripture, we are reminded that Jesus absolutely adored children and rebuked the disciples when they tried to keep them from Him. Luke 18:15-17 reads… “People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” This morning, we meet a young boy named Samuel! Samuel was dedicated to God by his mom, Hannah after she persistently prayed for a child. When Samuel was around four years old, he was taken to the tabernacle to serve under Eli the priest. Even as a child, Samuel was given his own tunic, a garment normally reserved for a priest. Samuel was a prophet and heard from God: 1 Samuel 3:10 says, “The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’”
Dedicated to the temple when he was just a baby, Samuel was destined to lead an extraordinary life. As Samuel grew, his prophetic gift increased.
1 Samuel 3:19 says, “The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.” Significantly and incredibly, it was Samuel who chose David to be king of Israel.
To God Be the Glory for Samuel! The main theme throughout Samuel’s life is that God alone should receive the glory and honor. A key verse in the life of Samuel relates his words to King Saul in 1 Samuel 15:22: “But Samuel replied: ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams’”. Obedience to God’s Word must always be our top priority!
