Tips and Tidbits

How to keep your smile healthy during trick or treat season

Going out for Halloween candy is a tradition many families participate in and it can be a trying time of year for parents navigating sugar highs and lows and trying to discourage their children, or in some cases themselves from binging on Halloween treats. We want to offer some alternatives to giving out Halloween candy that will still bring joy to kids in your neighbourhood without contributing to the sugar rush.

Alternatives to Halloween Candy

Toothbrushes…just kidding.

We put that in because we knew it was expected. If you drop by our offices you may receive a toothbrush and toothpaste but we understand you may not want to be “that house,” on your block.

Stickers and playdough

Non-edible offerings have made a surge in recent years due to food allergies and restrictions many kids have. Fun themed stickers and playdough are offered in packs and sold where Halloween candy is sold.

Chips

Okay so technically this is still junk food, but it doesn’t have the sugar that candy does and won’t have as great an impact on oral health at least.

Coupons

No we don’t think you should give kids $2 off toilet paper, but many people in the neighbourhoods we trick or treat in have given skating and swimming passes, and other experience related coupons for kids to enjoy once Halloween is over.

Sugarless gum

This is one we can get behind. Kids like gum, so why not offer the sugarless kind? If you’re able to budget for it, (24 packs are offered at Costco) you can give full packs of Trident. If you pick berry flavour or bubble gum flavour kids will be happy and so will parents.

Sugar free lollipops

Lollipops sweetened with xylitol or stevia are quite common now. Xylitol actually works to clean teeth so it may help counteract all the other sugary treats kids eat.

After Halloween

If you, and/or your kids do end up eating lots of candy, make sure you come in for a cleaning and check-up to stay cavity free. Hope your enjoyed Diamond Dental’s first newsletter! Stayed tuned for our November newsletter coming your way soon!
