A request comes from reader Mark from the Howard (Centre County) Fire Department and PA Forestry Association for a kind word on the fire company's annual Punkin Chunkin' Fall Festival, to be held this year on October 22nd at Bald Eagle State Park.
Mark writes, "This event benefits the Howard Volunteer Fire Co. [and] brings Chunkers from several states, including a world record chunker (human powered torsion machine Smokin Llanas) as well as Fat Jimmy of Science Channel fame to the Park where pumpkins are propelled into the lake out to 2,000 feet."
"Many of the chunkers are engineers, scout troops, etc. Chunkers include trebuchets, catapults and air cannons. Admission and parking is free and can be enjoyed by families with zero to hundreds of dollars. We have 30 food vendors and 50-75+ craft vendors. Hayrides through the Park along the Butterfly Trail and past the skating pond, pie eating contest, bounce house and mini chunkers for the kids to fire mini pumpkins into the lake."
Best of all? "All pumpkin residue floats and is gathered from the beach and lake and returned to the donating Amish farm for pig feed - a green event. Fire company volunteers spend the next day cleaning the entire event area leaving it much cleaner than found. Most of the trash we pick up has accumulated over the summer and not during the Punkin Chunkin. We pick it all up, going into the brush and weeds to get those pieces of paper and plastic blown from the beach. Park management continues to be ecstatic with the acres of clean beach area going into the winter."
