HAUS 17th National Meeting - You are invited!

Dear alumni and friends of Heidelberg University,

We cordially invite all former students, exchange students, graduates, researchers, professors, and other friends of Universität Heidelberg to participate in the 17th HAUS National Meeting, taking place the weekend of

October 3–5, 2025 in Chicago, IL.

Join us as we reconnect with old friends, welcome new faces, and celebrate our shared ties with Uni Heidelberg. The weekend will feature inspiring talks, engaging discussions, a Chicago River Architecture tour, and plenty of opportunities for networking in one of America’s most vibrant cities.

Jahreshauptversammlung at Goethe-Institut Chicago

As is tradition at our National Meeting, the Jahreshauptversammlung will feature updates from the HAUS President and fresh insights from Heidelberg—including remarks from HAI, the Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Marc-Philippe Weller and early career researchers from Heidelberg. We are grateful to the Goethe-Institut Chicago and its director & Heidelberg alumnus Dr. Leonhard Emmerling for hosting us.

Dinner Talk: The Gentrification Experience in Chicago: Costs and Benefits by Professor David Wilson

The David Rubenstein Forum at the University of Chicago is a striking new facility designed to convene scholars, researchers, and dignitaries from around the world for intellectual engagement and the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. The ten-story tower’s unique position on the Midway allows for expansive views toward the campus and surrounding communities as well as downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan. It is thoughtfully designed to host events that promote inquiry, the open exchange of ideas, and the power of convening.

David Wilson is a professor of geography and urban planning at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His work focuses on the ever-changing urban environment as a place in the urban economy. David’s talk will focus on the costs and benefits of the gentrification process as it currently is unfolding in Chicago. David has strong ties to Heidelberg: he has been a visiting scholar at the Department of Geography, a fellow at the Center for Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Studies, and a Max-Kade Guest Professor at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies.
