Hello
How is everything going? Greetings from Uruguay 🇺🇾
I’ve got to say that I’ve been really enjoying the beautiful autumnal days that we’ve been experiencing in Uruguay for the last few weeks. The leaves are turning on the trees, we had a cold snap to remind us summer was over and then it went back to being balmy. This weekend for example, we’re expecting temperatures in the mid 20s. And it looks like everybody will be able to be outside for the traditional May 1 asados—barbecues—on Monday.
People often ask me when is the best time to visit Uruguay. Well, it really depends on the type of season that you love. After all we have four, just like other temperate climates.
I put together this matrix to help you decide
In the meantime, what else is happening this weekend in Uruguay?
Tonight at 9pm our national census collection starts. The last census was in 2011. This one will be the first ever to be carried out online and we’ll be able to answer the questions directly ourselves, without an interviewer.
All households in Uruguay, that’s including those of us who are not Uruguayan-born, if we have a house here, then we can complete the census. The only requirement is that you are hooked up to the national electricity grid, because you need to input your UTE electricity account details to get started.
I’ve always marvelled at the massive imprint that Afro-Uruguayans have had on Uruguay’s cultural identity as a whole. Black Uruguayans created Uruguay’s only uniquely autochthonous musical form—candombe (Uruguay has lots of other music genres but they can also be heard in parts of Argentina or Brazil. Only candombe is 100% uniquely Uruguayan). The influence of Africa is all over Uruguayan carnival—and carnival is a huge part of Uruguay’s national identity. Yet only 8% of the population was officially recognised in the 2011 census as having African heritage in the last census.
A new campaign aims to encourage black Uruguayans to correct the statistics

I’ll be sure to share some of the key findings of the 2023 census once the results are out later on in the year.
