AET General Newsletter - July 2021

After a challenging year, summer is most definitely here! In this latest newsletter, you can find out what we've been up to recently including a round-up from our regional staff, a review of our June conference and all the latest from PiP including some exciting forthcoming dates for your diary if you live locally or are visiting Dorset over the holidays.

An update from our CEO

What a whirlwind of a year it has been for us at the AET, moving to our new home, Pavilion in The Park ( PiP) in April, setting up and opening the café and community room in the midst of lockdown, doubling our outreach to support young people aged up to 25 and covering cannabis in our work for the first time!

We have also managed to hold our third National Alcohol and Drugs Education conference at the Guildhall face to face, albeit a year late.

We are truly humbled by how quickly PiP has been embraced to be at the heart of the community in Dorchester, from our local GP surgery hosting talking cafes to holiday clubs throughout August for local children. We do hope you will come and see us if you have a chance. www.pipspoundbury.com

National Drug and Alcohol Conference 2021

On the 28^th June The Alcohol Education Trust and The DSM Foundation co-hosted the third Alcohol and Drug Education Conference at The City of London Guildhall, kindly hosted by The London Alcohol and Drug Forum. We were delighted that, following the conference's cancellation last year, it was able to take place face to face.

Speakers included Kirsty Blenkins, Young People, Alcohol, Drugs, Tobacco and Justice Division, Public Health England, Dr David Regis, Co-Director of The School Health Education Unit and Roary Pownell, HMI Curriculum Unit Subject Lead PSHE, RSHE and Citizenship, OFSTED . Update from Karen - Midlands, South and West

A great 16+ face to face session took place with Prince's Trust in Poole, Dorset recently with the age of attendees varying from 18 – 25. The session was really interactive and great feedback was received especially in relation to the work we did on peer pressure.

I represented AET at Dorset’s Strategic Alliance Annual Conference. It was great to be a part of this network of organisations striving to make the lives of children in Dorset the best they can be.

We’ve been doing lots of work in Worcestershire with training sessions offered to all secondary schools throughout the county. Our Special Educational Needs resources (Talk about Alcohol games and Activities Pack and SEN workbook and four readymade lesson plans) have been particularly welcomed.

I also had a lovey training session with the youth workers of Young People Cornwall.

We are continuing our work in Derbyshire with three training sessions delivered last week; two in partnership with Derbyshire County Council and one as part of the Coriell Award (whole school approach to drug and Alcohol Education) across the county with around fifty schools in attendance. This sort of partnership work is really extending our reach and helping us to keep more and more young people safe around alcohol.

Update from Kathryn - North

Things are still going from strength to strength in the North and since the last newsletter with training sessions and plenty of exciting development work happening. I've delivered six training sessions to a variety of organisations including Liverpool College, Lancashire Community Safety Teams, Aspire in Rotherham and Lancashire Youth Commission and have further bookings right through until December!

It's always brilliant to hear how well sessions have gone:

Update from Brian - Scotland

Things are picking up again in Scotland as we make our way towards a return to normality. Brian has been delighted to resume some face-to-face meetings and he has been busy focussing on youth organisations during the school holidays which are earlier than in the rest of the UK. Organisations supported include South West Edinburgh Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP), National Heritage Parks and Scotland Fire and Rescue Service.

Brian is also helping East Renfrewshire working group as they look to update their PSHE resources.

Youth Scotland is the largest national youth work organisation and supports over 66,000 young people a year. Brian has been in contact with them to help with offering our wide range of resources (including a Scotland-specific Teacher Workbook) and staff training.

Latest PiP news

It has been an amazing first three months for PiP cafe and community space with a large number of visitors and a range of groups already using the community space. We are excited about the wonderful events coming up!

Music at the Pavilion - 28th July

Due to the wonderful success of the first free music event at PiP, which welcomed over 140 people, we are pleased to announce the second Music at the Pavilion on Wednesday 28th July from noon. Bring a chair or a blanket, grab a sandwich or lunch from the café and enjoy some musical entertainment for a lunchtime with a difference.

Poundbury Food and Arts Festival -7th August 10am - 4pm

Dorset Food and Drink are hosting The Poundbury Food and Arts Festival on The Great Field, previously held at Queen Mother Square. On a smaller scale, and sadly without a stage this year, it will be championing the best of Dorset and showcasing a great line up of local food, drink, art, and craft. As always PiP will be open to offer you refreshments after a wander around the array of stalls and local produce on offer at the festival. Kids' Club - throughout August

We are working in partnership with Dorchester Town Council to host Summer Holiday clubs here at PiP during August. Every week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays we will have sessions for 5 - 10yr olds. The sessions include a hot meal, games and some outdoor fun with experienced staff. To register for a place you need your Summer in Dorset passcode. All places must be pre-booked in advance. Holiday Hangouts - 19th and 20th August

Two exciting days for 9 -14yr olds: 19th & 20th August 10 - 2pm! In partnership with Dorchester Town Council we are providing two days of a host of activities on The Great Field. This is an open access event and free to everyone, but places must be booked in advance. There are a limited number of places so please book quickly. There will be bungee runs, sumo suits, crafts, football, music and more for everyone to join in with. Don’t forget to use your Summer In Dorset passcode when booking to secure a free meal. Coming in September – Julia’s House Charity Dog Show

Julia’s House are hosting a dog show in partnership with us on The Great Field on Sunday September 19th. Knowing how much everyone loves their dogs at the Pavilion, this looks set to be a great day with a surprise celebrity judge! Put the date in your diary and join us with your favourite four legged friends for some competition and fun classes. As soon as there are details of the classes to enter we will send you a link. We love welcoming well-behaved furry friends at the café and there are always dog treats, water (and poo bags!) by the door.

Project manager for alcohol and cannabis project for vulnerable 16 – 25 year olds

Home working with some travel

The Alcohol Education Trust is seeking an experienced part-time project manager to lead on the roll out of a programme for 16 – 25 year olds more vulnerable to problematic alcohol and cannabis use. Experience of working with young adults in alternative settings an advantage, as is knowledge of successful peer to peer programme design and implementation. The candidate will need to work well as part of a team, be self-motivated, prepared to undertake some travel and be organised. Some knowledge of measuring impact and evaluation techniques an advantage. 16 hours a week, home based.

AET resources update

It has been a very busy time recently in terms of developing new resources to ensure we can reach as many ages, abilities and settings as possible. For all enquiries about resources, please contact kate@alcoholeducationtrust.org .

Alcohol and cannabis resources for 16-25 year olds

We have now developed resources especially designed for use with ages 16+ covering both alcohol and cannabis. Initially, these are being used in Foyer settings. Foyers provide secure supported housing to vulnerable young people aged between 16-25 and provide opportunities for personal development and other services that enable young people to reconnect with learning, increase their employability, improve their health and wellbeing, and develop leadership potential. We are now in the process of developing the resources so that they can also be used with a range of 16+ settings. Please contact kate@alcoholeducationtrust.org for further details.

We are currently out of stock of the hard copy of our Teacher Workbook as we have been busy editing and re-printing it to include links to our new set of six ready-prepared alcohol lesson plans. Hard copies of the updated workbooks will be ready in time for the new school year but in the meantime, you can download it via Download Teacher Workbook - Alcohol Education Trust

We are excited to be producing USBs which include our resources and we have just received the first batch and, due to the number of orders waiting, are already ordering a second!
