Forest Life - Building cooperation, developing skills and sharing knowledge for Natura 2000 forests in Greece
5th Newsletter, June 2017

Editorial

Since spring 2017, ForestLife has been in the process of preparing for its next phase, which regards the development of the Collaboration Platform for Forests and of the Application for smartphones and tablets. At the same time, all communication and dissemination actions of the project continue.

In this issue, we present the project’s cooperation with Athens International Airport and the KinderDocs documentaries as well as the participation of ForestLife in this year's 25th anniversary of the LIFE Financial Instrument.

Other forest news include briefings on the International Conference on the Sustainable Management and Restoration of Mediterranean Forests held in Palermo, Sicily, as well as on two particularly interesting publications: WWF Poland's publication on the need to manage dead wood for the benefit of biodiversity and the publication of the European Forest Institute on the role of wood construction in reducing environmental degradation. The issue also presents an easy way to get access to the Greek bird data (report on the implementation of the Birds Directive for the period 2008-2012) on the Website on Nature and Biodiversity of Greece. Finally, a detailed description of the habitat type 92A0 "Salix alba and Populus alba galleries", one of the six habitat types on which the project focuses, is given in the current issue.

The actions of the project were presented on the occasion of the award-winning Once Upon a Tree (the Netherlands), which was screened on February 3 and 4, and on 30 March 2017 at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.

The International Conference on Sustainable Management and Restoration of Mediterranean Forests in Palermo

Since the impacts from the loss of forest ecosystems to nature and man have been documented many decades ago, sustainable management has been the foundation of every effort to conserve forest ecosystems. Gradually, debates on sustainable forest management were accompanied by those focusing on restoration of degraded forest ecosystems. The 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity was of decisive importance in this respect.
