Dear followers, 

This week we would like to give you the answer to another question that we encounter very often; what are these spacers for?

Well, these spacers have many benefits. Some are very obvious and some need a little explanation. We will cover them all in this newsletter.

But first, let us briefly remind you the parts of our ‘ABS Plus adjustable-height disposable formworks’; ABS Plus system consists of 4 parts as shown in the figure below:

1- ABS Plus - Spacer (min. 2, max. 4 pcs per m2, depending on the project)

2- ABS Plus - Base (2 pcs/m², Ø125 mm, H 2,5 cm)

3- ABS Plus - Leg (2 pcs/m² cut to the heights required by the project, Ø125 mm)

4- ABS Plus - H15 Dome (2 pcs/m²)

To accommodate project-specific heights, the legs are cut to specification at the factory before delivery. Alternatively, the legs can be cut on-site by the customer fitting exact heights. Unlike similar systems, the ABS Plus system consists of 2 legs per m2, which, in addition to other advantages, provides additional ease of application and significant cost savings on concrete and steel.

So, what exactly does the spacer do?

When we first designed this part, our main goal was to facilitate and accelerate the installation of the domes on site. It is really easy to assemble the dome if the base and leg pair is clearly located.

Another important point is that once the grid consisting of the bases and spacers is installed, the legs are guaranteed to stand with a ninety-degree angle to the floor. In order to maintain the high the load-bearing capacity of the reinforced concrete raised floor to be constructed, the centre of gravity of each leg filled with concrete must remain within the leg's diameter touching the slab.

Although these two benefits are very important, the main benefit that came up in our last few projects is the ease of placing mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) fittings between the disposable formwork legs after the spacers and bases are placed.

After placing the bases and spacers in the area to be filled, the MEP teams can work comfortably in this area for days or even weeks and lay all the pipes and cables without difficulty. As the teams know exactly where the leg will be, they can easily make all horizontal and diagonal transitions as well as vertical exits at the exact coordinate. Some sites even require leakage tests before closing the domes.

In other applications in the world, we often see that disposable formworks are used with fixed heights to make the price advantageous at fill heights below 70 cm. Yes, if there is no installation passage, maybe this application can be done, but if there is the passage of MEP installations, this application can turn into a nightmare.

Likewise, we never witnessed even once that the pipes got between the fixed legs as drawn on paper even if the job site was perfectly constructed to the exact millimetre. On the contrary, the site always called us and asked what to do because the previously laid pipe was in the way of the disposable formwork system's feet.

Of course, there is something to do, but this is a really labour-intensive renovation; the continuous formwork system has to be cut and a gallery for that pipe has to be constructed. Only then the system can continue again. But, what if there are too many pipes? Or, what if the pipes need to cross diagonally? A total nightmare!

Now, we would like to share with you 2 tips for passing PVC sewage pipes under the concrete raised floors. First, in order to lay the pipes at the desired slope, the feet that will carry the pipes must be anchored to the floor, just like you would do on the ceiling. After that, clamps have to be mounted to these feet, and pipes are attached to these clamps horizontally at the desired slope.

Second, the vertical lines should be supported against water drop pressure by concrete blocks right at the elbows before moving horizontally. Of course, if HDPE welded pipes are used, there is no need for such concrete blocks.

Finally, we would like to show you an application for some special cases where water insulation shall not be damaged at all costs. In this case, the regular steel profiles cannot be anchored to the slab. Hence, the clamps are attached to the legs of the disposable formworks and the profiles are mounted between the clamps horizontally to carry the plumbing pipes. Again, the inclination is adjusted through the clamps.
