CUPE 4600 trivia Night

Come show off your trivia chops at Mike's Place (2nd floor of Nideyinàn) on January 31st at 6pm. Some of our exec board members will be in attendance to help you crown the brainiest workers on campus!

We'll have some union and Carleton related trivia, and lots of refreshments for you all! 

Bring your friends, bring your roommates, bring your seat mate from the last flight you were on. The more the merrier!

External Affairs Committee Meeting

This committee is chaired by our co-VP Externals, and looks to create opportunities for our membership to act in solidarity with other labour unions, activist organizations, and progressive movements locally as well as internationally. This is done in a number of different ways, from showing up to support picket lines to making donations to international movements.

Members will be able to help choose where this committee will spend its resources, and how we will show up for our allies.

The EAC meetings will be held biweekly on Wednesdays at 4pm

What is the Gender Affirmation Fund?

In addition to the gender-affirming care included in your health benefits, CUPE 4600 has a fund intended to help members with some of the costs associated with gender-affirming care and transition. You can find more information about the fund, including the application form, on this page.

Mobilization Committee meeting

You are invited to join the next meeting of the CUPE 4600 Mobilization Committee.

What is the Mobilization Committee?

The CUPE 4600 Mobilization Committee is made of of members from both units. You do not need to be an elected official of the union in order to join the committee. No prior union organizing experience necessary, all are welcome!

This committee is tasked with organizing campaigns, events, protests, pickets, and educational workshops for the membership. The goals of this work change from year to year, depending on what is happening at Carleton and in the community. Sometimes this work focuses on preparing for a potential strike, other times it might be more aimed at supporting other unions or community groups. This is decided by the members of the committee.

What happens at the meetings?

The meetings take place every two weeks, and are a space for members to discuss upcoming projects. This committee is chaired by an elected member, who runs the meetings and prepares an agenda.

At the meeting, all members are encouraged to participate in the discussions and decision making process. Meeting participants will get to help plan the projects put forward by the committee, sign up for volunteering tasks, prepare materials, and learn some useful hands-on organizing skills in the process!

The meetings happen in a hybrid format, meaning it is a mix of in-person and online participation.

Educational Event on Palestine

Wednesday, February 7th 4-6pm 

CUPE 4600 and Labour For Palestine - Ottawa will be hosting an educational event for union members. Come learn about the importance of union solidarity in the fight for Palestinian human rights. 

Why is Palestine a labour issue? What can unionized workers do to support Palestinians? What has the role of unions been in the fight against apartheid? Find out on February 7th! 

This will be a hybrid event, with more details coming soon.

March with Labour for Palestine

Join CUPE 4600 and Labour For Palestine during Sunday's march and protest in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

Meet us at PSAC (233 Gilmour) at 1:30pm on Sunday January 28th, and let's walk together to the Human Rights Monument!!

Labour will continue advocating for an end to the genocide against Palestinians, an end to the blockade and siege of Gaza, and an end to Canada's complicity in crimes against Palestinians

Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, civilian staff who provide critical support services on military bases demand respect and equity. Many currently make little more than minimum wage while their federal government counterparts make much more for the same job

“At NPF, we’re treated like second-class workers who get paid less to do the same work as our colleagues elsewhere in the public service,” said Cathy O’Kane, Vice-President for NPF with UNDE who has worked as an NPF employee for more than 30 years. “It has taken me more than 30 years to reach the same pay as an entry-level casual worker at the Department of National Defence. I want to make things better for all NPF members, so that others don’t have to go through what I did."

Nonviolent Direct Action, Creative Protest and Planning Effective Campaigns Workshop

We will send location details (we will be in an accessible space) after you have registered. Please let us know specific issues you would like to have covered in the workshop. We’ll send some video clips to help get you prepared for the day.

We request that participants be masked to protect yourselves amidst the high rates of respiratory viruses and in support of those immunocompromised members of the community who otherwise cannot attend such indoor gatherings. HEPA filters will be running throughout the day.

WHY THIS WORKSHOP?
Protests are common in Ottawa – Gaza, climate catastrophe, anti-racism, solidarity with LGBTQ2+, anti-poverty – and while many of us are comfortable showing up as long as someone else is organizing them, we tend to forget that there is an artistry and skills set to them, especially those that may involve some level of confrontation or that turn out unexpectedly. Having those skills to fall back on can ensure your safety and keeping the message focused.
Just as we wouldn’t send someone into surgery without training, having training for political protests and nonviolent direct actions is critical to protect you, your message, and your community. The workshop will include discussion, role plays to prepare you for real-life situations, video samples, laughter and, importantly, joy, because to come together to say “NO” to the injustices of the world is an opportunity for us to live in the best of ourselves.

This in-depth interactive workshop, facilitated by a Homes not Bombs trainer with decades of experience conducting trainings in schools, prisons, faith groups, anti-globalization convergences, and other venues, will provide you with the knowledge, skills, and legal/political/theatrical literacy you need to carry out successful, creative nonviolent direct actions that go beyond the “Demonstrations 101″ box.
