Through last weekend’s celebration of Pentecost and this weekend’s Trinity Sunday, we are reminded of all of the ways that the apostles were emboldened with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. In that same spirit of courage, this week we are featuring four voices of FutureChurch, each called to lift up their voices and speak from the heart in solidarity and for justice:

Just Word
Today Tara Gallagher invites us to explore the Spirit “written upon our hearts” with the help of Fr. Richard Rohr and a mature spirituality; engage lessons from the Church’s transition to Vatican II, and its move away from that renewal in the present; and embody a spirituality of resilience, justice, and care for our neighbors with the help of The Center for Action and Contemplation, John O’Donohue, and the examples of Laundry Love and Little Free Pantries.
"This Sunday’s focus on the Trinity invites reflection on some deeper questions these global events stir up. How do we now understand Father sending Son, and Son offering Spirit (Advocate, Counselor, Comforter) to be with us through challenges 'until the end of the age?' How does Jesus’s message to the world – its broadness of scope and heart, its symbolism, its invitation to a lifetime journey of spirit-seeking-Spirit – translate to us today in our own soul journeys? And how does it guide our collective response to the world’s needs?"
Tara Gallagher was raised in the Rocky Mountain West in a large, close family with Irish roots. She has worked professionally as a history teacher and newspaper journalist, and in museum archives and collections. She and her husband have a grown son and daughter. Family and oral history, old things and music that tell a story, ‘place’ and the natural world, spiritual exploration, and social justice all interest her.

Catholic Women Preach
Preaching for Trinity Sunday, Julia Erdlen offers a reflection on the many ways of relating to God:
"God is always bigger than we can imagine, and the Trinity is a constant reminder of that. If I try too hard to nail down one metaphor, one perfect image to describe this mystery, I’ll hit up against the limit of my own human understanding. I can’t smush down God into a tiny box. God simply won’t fit. God is always bigger than I can imagine, and all I can do is keep adding more and more ways to describe and understand God, as I grow in my own understanding and encounter with God."
Julia Erdlen (she/her) currently serves as the Liturgy Coordinator at Saint Louis University. Originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia, she completed her MDiv at Boston College’s Clough School of Theology and Ministry, where she worked with low-income and LGBTQ+ students. She has also written for US Catholic & New Ways Ministry, and is a part-time hospital chaplain.

"The Fireplace Community Brings the Flames of Pentecost to Life"
|
|
|
|
With the fire of Pentecost and emboldened by the Holy Spirit, we at FutureChurch are engaging in a new project to recognize and celebrate communities that are embodying the mission of Pentecost. Over the next several months, we will be highlighting communities that have been emboldened to live the Gospel in new and creative ways. We begin by introducing you to The Fireplace Community.
Excerpt: On an unassuming residential street in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, an emerging model of intentional community is creating a place of rest, spiritual growth, and joy. According to its website, The Fireplace started in February 2021 by Sister Julia Walsh, FSPA and Sister Sharon Dillon, SSJ-TOSF, is an intentional community of artists, activists, and spiritual seekers. From its seven residential members to the larger community that gathers at the residence for dinners, spirituality nights, events and celebrations, The Fireplace has certainly become a place of companionship for all who walk up its front steps.
