Ray Knight Q & A

Ray Knight played the unforgettable Series 1 German barman ‘Kurt’ serving the lads in ‘The Club’ each evening after a hard day working on the BECO Building Site. We recently caught up with Ray - pictured here with Pat Roach - and asked him about his time on set.

Ray tells us an in-depth fascinating insight into his time on set; how he got the role, what went wrong during filming, why the lads drank bottled Becks instead of draft beer and why the cast took great delight calling him ‘Big t**s Helga’ between takes!

Crack open a beer, relax and find out more about Ray and what he’s been up to since filming Auf Wiedersehen, Pet here.

The Official Auf Wiedersehen, Pet team would like to thank Ray for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions and wish him all the very best for the future.

Neville & Moxey 'Off Your Trolley'!

From time to time we receive some incredible memorabilia sent in from fans from around the world inviting us to share brilliantly forgotten gems on our Official Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Fansite.

Following recent communication from an anonymous fan, we're delighted to share this rare spin off promotional video entitled 'Off Your Trolley" starring Kevin Whately as 'The Temporary Gaffer' and Chris Fairbank as 'The Roofer'.

Both brilliantly retain their 'Auf Pet' characters ‘Neville’ and ‘Moxey’ in a short 10-minute drama documenting the day to day activities of a naive young roofer on a typical construction site. It’s only after narrowly escaping a fatal accident that the gaffer introduces his roofer to the ‘Youngman Roofing Trolley’ offering a safe working platform from which to work improving health and safety on site.

Riding on the popularity of the hit ITV comedy drama, the video was written and produced by ‘Supervision Limited’ in 1989 following the success of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Series 2 and featured two household names to help promote the ‘Youngman Roofing Trolley’ system.

Find out how site safety was improved, which saucy woman’s magazine Brenda’s been reading and who pays for that first round at the Barley Mow following an early finish!

BECO Building Site in 1983.

The BECO Building Site is where it all started. And contrary to popular belief, the film set was in fact constructed at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, England, where the BBC’s flagship drama EastEnders is currently filmed. Only a small number of scenes were in fact filmed in Germany convincing our mind the boys were far from British soil.

This artists impression above – one of several produced by team member Andy Patrick – first featured in the ‘Evening Chronicle’ ahead of the Auf Wiedersehen, Pet 30th Anniversary celebrations at the Hilton NewcastleGateshead back in September 2013.

This image beautifully illustrates an elevated view of how the film set would have looked during filming back in 1983. Central to the image is Hut B, home of our ‘Magnificent 7’. To the left of Hut B is the brown ‘Turks Hut’; and beyond, several partly constructed buildings form the film set backdrop to in excess of 122 scenes filmed throughout Series 1. In the distance, typical English domestic terrace housing can be seen on ‘Malden Road’, ‘Welbeck Close’ and ‘Stratfield Road’. How fantastic would it have been to watch filming unfold from your own back window?!

This image, along with many more together with a potted history of the Elstree back lot is now available to view at the official Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Fansite at  www.BECObuilding.site
