Today's Bible Study Lesson
“A
New Home”
Aim:
Examine the unique
genre of “apocalypse” that characterizes Revelation in order to
discern how to understand its message;
Contemplate
the creation of a new heaven and a new earth for the hope that this
vision holds for the faithful; and Embrace
the peace of God that begins in this life with Jesus and continues in
God’s new creation.
Background:
Revelations 21:1-8
Bible
Lesson:
Revelations
21:1-8
“And
God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no
more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any
more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelations
21:4 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Apostle John is the author of the Gospel According to John and the
New Testament Books of 1, 2, and 3 John and Revelations. John was
one of Jesus twelve disciples and on many occasions he was referred
to as “the disciple that Jesus loved.” While dying on the cross
for the sins of humankind, Jesus assigned the care of His “earthly
mother” to John. John was a member of Jesus’ inner circle of
disciples, Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at the Mount
of Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. John penned
Revelations while imprisoned on the Isle of Patmos for his faith.
“Patmos
is now known internationally as the “Jerusalem of the Aegean,”
or the “Island of the Apocalypse,” because this is where the
Book of Revelation was written by John, who found refuge on the
island in the 1st century AD.” The Precepts for Living Commentary
introduces this lesson as follows: “The Book of Revelations
records four visions of John. The first vision (1:12-3:22) is of
Jesus and His messages to the seven churches. The second vision
(4:1-13:18) depicts Jesus Christ at the Throne of God, opening the
seven seals. The third vision (14:1-16:21) describes Christ on Mount
Zion. Our lesson opens with the beginning of the fourth vision, in
which we will learn about the ultimate fulfillment of God’s
promise in Christ – the Holy City, New Jerusalem.”
- Revelations
21:1-2, The Presentation:
The Apostle John describes what he sees with his spiritual eye that
of a new heaven and a new earth. He explains that the old heaven and
old earth had passed away and also there was no more sea. The
thought of God providing a new heaven and new earth brings the
expection of great improvements without the former concerns and
imperfections brought about by humankind’s rebellious and evil
behavior. The sea which in ancient times was a representation of
difficulties and problems was not a part of God’s restoration
project. How wonderful to invision a new start in life!
John
saw the holy city, New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.
Its magnificence reminded him of the meticulous detail and the
sparing of no expense in the extraordinary effort that a new bride
goes to in the preparation for her bridegroom. In this case the Body
of Christ, the church, is the bride being prepared for the
bridegroom, God the Son. What an indescribable sight of the Body of
Christ, adorned by God for marriage to the Lamb of God!
- Revelations
21:3-4, The Proclamation:
John hears a mighty voice proclaim that the tabernacle, the dwelling
place of God, will be with humankind and God will relate with
humankind similar to what was in the Garden on Eden. Humankind will
be His people and God Himself will be our God. Beyond His presence,
God will wipe away ALL tears, physical death will be no more,
sorrows that plague humankind will cease, and there will be NO more
pain. How do these changes come about? Because God has removed all
of the former things that we associate with life as we have known
it. God, Himself declares that He has made all things new and
directs Apostle John to write what he has seen for it is true and
faithful, or in other words it is a done deal!
-
Revelations
21:5-8, The Promises:
God the Son declares the restoration is completed and He is Alpha
and Omega, the beginning and the ending. In actuality, He has no
beginning or ending. God the Son promises to freely give the water
of life to those who thirst for his righteousness. He further
promised to those who persisted and endured in pursuing rightousness
that they shall inherit all things promised by God. These saints
will have the permanent relationship of being children of God and
God being their God. What a wonderful eternal existence!
But
for those who do not place their faith in God and His Son and pursue
unrighteous living, abominable behavior including murder, sexual
sins, witchcraft, idoltry, lying, and other unmentioned evil acts,
they will burn in the lake of fire and brimestone which is defined
as the second death, permanent separation from their Creator, God.
What a eternal punishment to avoid at all cost!
Take
Aways:
- Our
decisions and actions in this life have eternal consequences.
- For
believers in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, there is a coming
existence without tears, sorrow, pain, and the troubles of this
world!
- There
is an eternal punishment of the Second Death, permanent separation
from our
Creator,
God, to avoid at all costs!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Therefore
if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are
passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
KJV
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the
gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many
there be which go in thereat: Because strait [is] the gate, and
narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that
find it.” Matthew 7:13-14 KJV
“Let not your heart be
troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's
house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would have told
you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that
where I am, [there] ye may be also.” John 14:1-3 KJV
“I
am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall
go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to
steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have
life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.” John 10:9-10
KJV
