Are you not entertained?
Do you have a favourite film which is inspired by the ancient world? Family-movie-night this week was the wonderful Gladiator directed by Ridley Scott, which we love, despite its faults.
It's been a few years since I've watched it but I can still recall much of the dialogue. It was Naomi's first time so I tried to hold in the urge to recite the lines along with the actors, but who doesn't love to shout out along with Russell Crowe, "what we do in life, echoes in eternity" and of course the immortal lines "my name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the armies of the north...."
Naomi was full of questions about the Colosseum and what remains of it; I fear there may be another field trip arising out of this!
My friend Horace regularly sends me emails attaching newspaper articles about archaeological finds and news about the ancient world. He recently sent me a link to this blog post which illustrates how ancient Rome might have looked, what it looks like today and how the city developed.
