Say it with me, ,
Move over, October! November’s blowing in!
And it’s time to talk turkey—or, in our case, chicken. Spring chicken! Yep, spring is in the air here in Lesotho, but my heart screams, “It’s Fall!”
I love living here but haven’t gotten used to the opposite seasons. I miss the fall in the Pacific Northwest—seeing the trees changing colors and snuggling up under the blankets as the rain dances on the roof. And don't forget the star of the month: Thanksgiving!
I love the preparations that go into celebrating Thanksgiving. Usually, that includes stuffing a turkey and preparing LOTS of side dishes which seem to vary depending on what part of the country you’re from. For me, I recall bread stuffing (or some call it dressing), mashed potatoes and gravy, bread rolls, a relish tray with a variety of vegetables and dip, and of course, dessert—usually, pumpkin pie smothered in whipped cream.
But here in Lesotho, Thanksgiving is not recognized as a holiday. So since we don’t get the day off, we don’t get the day to prepare the feast. It’s also a challenge to gather together. If we do, it’s in the evening for dinner, and we do a pot-luck thing. And, what I used to celebrate with family, we now celebrate with team friends and sometimes strangers.
We have had to be creative to celebrate a holiday that most locals don’t understand. Though they have quite enjoyed partaking in the annual feasting of it all, the holiday remains a mystery to them. And things look a bit different for us, too.
That’s where the chicken comes in! Although one of the local grocery stores will sometimes import frozen turkey, it can be pretty pricey, so we opt for chicken. So, while American Thanksgiving traditions still linger in our hearts, our wallet asks for practicality.
So, whether you are still in America or spending your first—or fifteenth—Thanksgiving overseas, whether in the fall or spring season, let’s aim to remember what the day is about and carry that with you through the year. Let's be thankful for where the Lord has us and the love which surrounds us.
May your Thanksgiving be blessed with love, family, and friendship no matter where you are!
