Dawn, in her turret, loves pigeons – the only splash of colour in her grey world. Though this one creeping along the top of the garden fence to the bird feeders is very dull and, quite frankly, creepy!
I wrote the first chapter of Spare in an about an hour in 2012, because I urgently needed something new for a critique group at the SCBWI conference. Perhaps thinking of it as a throwaway piece helped me write it so quickly?
But that didn't last long. An agent really liked it and I had to tell her that that was all there was. So I spent the next year working out why Dawn, Austen, and Tamara were stuck in my old student room. It was baffling at times but when it's not all a dense fog, I really enjoy the puzzle of a new story.
Why pigeons? There was probably one on my windowsill as I was hurrying to get those first words down.
However, when pigeons invade my garden, more often than not I'm out there doing a passable impression of Aunt Betsey Trotwood.
Here she is, magnificently played by Tilda Swinton.
I love this film.
