A Message from Our President

Leading Brightly and Boldly

The women in the Easter story brought the message of hope to those waiting behind.  This was just one example of when bold, holy women have led in the church.  In most cases that have been documented, the message that women bring is one of peace and hope.

The women at the tomb brought the message of hope and salvation to those waiting behind and to the rest of the world!  Their message of hope is one that we still read today!

With the current situation, we cannot meet to practice our holy leadership.  We are still able to bring hope to many in other ways.  We can pick up the phone and make a true call - just to talk and share!  You can make a card to send or even send one that you bought.  A handwritten note or letter can make a world of difference to someone who is feeling alone.  From a recent experience, I can let you know that a letter is better than a phone call for a person with memory issues.  They may forget the call. A letter, note, or card can be saved and read and re-read multiple times!

The other area that I have noticed women leading boldly and bringing hope is also know as Social Action campaigns.  The Social Action areas that we vote on each year at our Conference level meeting are just a few areas where women show their leadership.  Our local ministries are other areas where we lead.  Some people have said that women who lead these fights are taking on the role of a knight slaying a dragon.  This is often said to insult the women and let them know they were stepping out of their proper place. To me, this is a compliment that we can slay the dragons that affect ourselves and others.

Some of the other dragons that can be fought are homelessness, poverty, addiction, mental illness, illiteracy, racism, sexism, classism, etc..  For many of these, HOPE is one factor that helps people to keep going.  Below, you will see a newsletter that I have recently received about how little it takes to bring hope to someone and how that can change their lives. This is being shared with permission from the original sender, Ryan Dowd who works at Hessed House, a homeless shelter.

Book Review - Special

This month, instead of reviewing a book, I am going to do a review of available resources.

At most of the libraries in our district, people with library cards can access books electronically (as an eBook or eAudio book). systems in our district, I have searched for the UMW books available in multiple formats.  If you check the sheet I sent out when the list was new, you will see columns at the right side that list the electronic availability of our books.  The books that are available online are listed with "OD" which stands for Over Drive.  This system (and its alternative app - Libby) is the most common one used. In case you didn't save the files, here is the link for the library files: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1feWObfc_d37ZznFj_w0-BW3_mdUrFA9D   If you click on the link, it will take you to the files. If you are reading this from a print out, you can type in the link to get to the files.

For those without library cards, some of the libraries in our district allow you to get an online only card.  These can be applied for without going into a branch.

Final Thoughts

You don't have to be perfect to be amazing.  You just have to be willing to stand up and bring hope.  Taking the time to contact others with a phone call, a card, or handwritten letter can still be accomplished in the current times.  These are ways that can bring hope as well as contact to others.  If you have people who are shut in (right now, that is most of us) these little things can make a world of difference to them.
