CYA Annual Prizegiving at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron Tuesday 30 May

You are invited to an awesome evening of camaraderie and the presentation of our beautiful trophies and awards.

it will be a big night with a Roger Mills special video and of course the usual fabulous presentation of your boats on the big screen as you step up to receive your burgee, award, or both. So please check the lists below and see if you are an award recipient.

All members, crew, families & supporters are very welcome to attend.

Time: 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start in the Dinghy Locker

Complimentary finger food will be available and a cash/eftpos bar will be operating.

Entry: $30.00 which can be prepaid to save queueing at the door, or at the door on the night – cash or credit card only.

Have You Read ... ?

There are so many wonderful second-hand books related to our passion of yachting and especially classic yachting. I have read quite a number regarding Australia II and her sensational victory.

A recent $5 special I came across is “Ben Lexcen : The Man, the Keel and the Cup” by Bruce Stannard. Having grown up admiring Volante and involved in education I have been intrigued by Ben’s story. In particular, the “education” and consequential experiences that gave rise to such a creative genius and the reluctance of some to accept it. His story is a useful, and perhaps timely, shot across the bows as to what constitutes an education.

A thought provoking read.

In search for the amazing Pencarrow, a 41 Bridgedecker. Does anyone know of her whereabouts?

She is a 41' Bridgedecker made out of strong straight stem triple diagonal Kauri. The photo shows her with an extended top.

SAVE OUR AUCKLAND HARDSTANDS!

The Auckland Yachting and Boating Association need YOUR help.

As you have probably experienced, Auckland is seriously undersupplied with hardstands. Wait times are growing and costs are escalating. Despite this, Council recently approved the sale of Pier 21 for housing, closed the yard at Little Shoal Bay, sold the Marina Precinct at Bayswater for conversion to apartments, and last month shut the hardstand at the Landing.

For months, the AYBA have tried to discuss these closures with Council, particularly their impact on boaties and the marine environment in Auckland – but to no avail. They believe there is adequate hardstanding in Auckland already, and it’s not Council’s business to ensure hardstands remain open. For this reason, the AYBA now have no option but to take Auckland Council to court.

We are specifically challenging their decision to shut the hardstand at the Landing (Orakei) and their decision to sell the land earmarked for a hardstand at Bayswater marina. To do this though, we really need the Auckland boating community’s financial support. Legal fees for two Court actions are far in excess of our Association’s annual budget.
