Children of the Light

Giving kids a brighter future

Edition 37 - January 2018

As we reflect back over 2017 and our last edition of Praise News, one just has to look up, smile and say, 'Thank You LORD'. The building of the centre continues, the grounds are looking amazing, the regular classes and programs continue, and to top it off we have started a child sponsorship program. All of this would not have been possible without the generous support from our donors. Thank you and God bless you!

According to a UN report 88% of African children cannot read properly after completing their education. Does that mean the remaining 12% are those who have the opportunity to attend the elite schools across the continent? At Children of the Light, we ensure that all the children that come to us enjoy the benefits of QUALITY education in a fun-filled learning environment without the burden of fees.

Christmas at the Centre

On December 24th, we held our Christmas Performance at the centre.  The bulletin boards and decorations were beautiful and the performance was wonderful. Special thanks to our sponsors: Sue and Terry Grainger (First Love Foundation, USA), Laurie Korum, our volunteers: Dolly Koshy and Kelly Stringer, the Children of the Light staff and children, and the wonderful, supportive audience.

Great time at FOCOS Hospital

Every December we make a trip to FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital to present the Christmas message to the children on extended stay. This year was special as some of the children from FOCOS joined in on the performance. Special thanks to Patricia Sims (a long term FOCOS volunteer), who helped with organizing the event and Action Boys FC, for the use of their bus to help transport the chidlren.

Reaching out to the elderly

Every year we give out colourful, hand-made parcels containing a wash cloth and bath soap.  This past festive season, we reached out to the elderly in the community.  This event took place one early Saturday morning in December, the CotL staff and children met to give the parcels.  It was a wonderful time for all, the children sang as they gave the parcels and those who received were delighted.

Thank you to Sharon Kohler, the staff at Lynfiled College, Kwadjo Opoku and Bill Brown for their donations toward our new mower.  Thank you also to Silas Opoku, Hans Mensah and all who help mow the lawns.

To our surprise, an anonymous kind person donated us four brand new tires for the pick-up. These tires were gratefully received as our previous tires were very worn.  Thank you very much!

Recycling Competition

Our Recycling Competition, Art Exhibition and Bake Sale Fundraiser last September, went really well. Thank you to everyone who supported this event either in cash or in baked donations, we raised close to GH₵1,000 (US$ 220). Special thanks to our judges Adwoa Gyimah, Esther Singh, and Nana Kwafo Mensah. They really did have a tough time choosing as the entries were all amazing.

Spelling Bee

Our 2017 Spelling Bee was a great success. Special thanks to our sponsors TOP CHOCO and H&H Biscuits. Thank you also to Ger Claessens-Teeuwen for the wonderful prizes we received via Nito and Lisa van der Grinten.  At the event we shared the colourful Crayon Magazine; this edition was extra special as it featured Children of the Light. THANK YOU Type Publishers & Type Company.

We are so proud of our bright, ever-growing library which contains a wonderful selection of children's books and learning resources.  Thank you to Cathy Dalimonte, Dr. Zadda Bazzy and all at Queens Creek Elementary, USA, who recently raised money to support CotL.  Thank you also to the Helensville Christian Life Centre, NZ, for their recent donation which we used to help complete work on the washrooms, and thank you to Hosanna Trust, NZ, for their continual support.

The building still has a lot to be done until it is complete, but when major things take place like the recent installation of the railing, we are so encouraged.  We take this opportunity to thank Dente Metal Studio, Peduase, who did a fantastic job on the railing (photo above). The railing has really made a difference to the top of the building.  We continue to seek support to complete the centre and fix our road, so anything given in cash or in kind will be greatly appreciated.

Message from the Founder,

The journey has been long and we still have a way to go, but all would not have been possible without God's faithfulness and our wonderful supporters.  I would like to use this opportunity to say, thank you to Sue and Terry Grainger (First Love Foundation, USA), our regular donors and all who have helped to get us where we are today.  May God Bless you all!

I am currently in NZ, it is wonderful to be with family and friends again.

With the CotL NZ board, we are working toward submitting all paperwork for CotL to be eligible for tax credit in NZ. I am also using this time to raise awareness for the program; if you or a group of potentially interested people would like for me to come and share the work of CotL, do let me know.  As mentioned, we have started a child sponsorship program.  Through individual sponsorship we are now supporting four children through regular school with fees, exercise books, school supplies and other school needs.  As a part of this program, we work closely with the child at the centre, with a remedial program for both literacy and numeracy. Our wish is to help more children this way.  For further information on sponsoring a child kindly email:
