Covid-19 derails gender equality gains

During the first wave of the pandemic, women’s employment losses totalled 2.2 million across the EU. Despite rising employment in the summer of 2020, women only gained half as many jobs back as men. This shows that the economic impact of the pandemic is having longer-lasting effects on women. The closure of schools and care facilities during lockdowns also put more pressure on women who were juggling both paid and unpaid work. Find out more here.

Are you eligible for parental leave?

Parental leave allows parents to care for their children and keep their jobs. However, not all parents have access to it. In the EU, 10% of women and 12% of men in employment are ineligible. Self-employed parents, as well as employees who didn’t work long enough before childbirth often face barriers. Check out the conditions in your country here.

Lockdowns to contain the coronavirus outbreak led to spikes in domestic violence reports. EIGE examined the measures each EU Member State took to protect women from violence and selected some promising practices. Estimating the cost of violence against women in the EU

EIGE is estimating the cost of violence against women in the European Union. The cost was first estimated in 2014 and amounted to almost 226 billion euros. Our new study will help monitor the EU’s progress on eradicating violence since then. The results will be available in May 2021. You can read our previous study here.

Artificial Intelligence: Good or bad for gender equality?

EIGE is looking at how artificial intelligence and platform work are transforming the labour market. The study, which is being prepared for the upcoming Slovenian presidency of the EU, will assess changing working conditions and different approaches to regulation in EU Member States. This term describes symbolic gestures that aim to give the impression of diversity but do not create an inclusive work environment. Call for tender: study on cyber violence against women

EIGE is looking for a contractor to map national policies and research on cyber violence against women. The study will look at the experiences of women and girls on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok and Snapchat and propose an EU-wide definition of cyber violence. If you are interested, apply here before 27 April 2021.
