Happy 4th of July, everyone. It’s so exciting that there will once again be fireworks in San Francisco. I hope you have a good vantage point for the show. NEXT will be closed in observation of the holiday; so if you have a request for us, please make sure to get it to us well in advance so that we may try to help. Have a Happy 4th.
We are steadily opening the office, welcoming in very small gatherings and working on blending our events between Zoom and in person. We’re delighted that members our NEXT community have offered to help staff the office, greet the curious that walk by, and help with occasional tasks. Talk to Rachel if you are interested in being an office volunteer. Game nights, chess lessons, coffee, and technology support are just a few of the ways we will be bringing life to the corner of Filbert & Columbus.

Two powerhouses in the field of aging...
Anne Halsted's memorial brought together so many of the people who are invested in improving San Francisco, including,
Speaker of The House, Nancy Pelosi, and NEXT Village co-founder and chair, Janet Crane, who connected post-service to celebrate their friend, Anne, and to discuss their shared passion, Aging-in-Place.

NEXT extends our condolences to the “family” of volunteers who supported member, Ina Hausner. Especially Dale Fehringer, Patty Myers, Molly Tello, and Peter Schmitz.
We will miss Ina. She was funny, sweet, talented, and entertained many with her piano playing, Anyone who spent time with her came away with a song and a smile. If there's a piano in Heaven, we think Ina is playing it for her new fans.

MASK-ARADE PARTY~ HALLOWEEN IN THE VILLAGE ~ SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27TH @ The Italian Athletic Club
We don’t want to be like the stores that put the next holiday’s candy out too early, but we’re just so excited to welcome back live music, dancing, costumes, and fellowship at our annual Halloween-in-the Village party, Sunday, October 31, at the Italian Athletic Club.
The Fundraising Committee is hard at work looking for great items for our auction and raffle; so if you have a beach or wine country house you’re willing to donate for a weekend, or some airline miles you can’t possibly use, or some other great item that would spark a bidding war, please let us know.
Many of our members receive a subsidized membership, and while coordinating over 4,000 hours of volunteer support, plus hosting nearly 500 events is why we are here, your support, in whatever form, makes it all possible. Thank you.

ONE HARD THING!
Sponsored by the young professionals at SF Evening Rotary, One Hard Thing is a chance to have some younger folks with an endless supply of elbow grease come to your home and help with tasks that are just too hard for one person. And, it's another reason to join NEXT... because this is a member-only event.
Here are some examples of how we might be able to help:
Flip a mattress or dust under the bed
Stand on a stool or ladder and change lightbulbs
Wash a window or two
Help plant some flowers
Help update your computer or untangle cords
Shake out rugs
Break up all of those Amazon boxes and take them to the recycling bin
No project too small! Generally, a team will be able to spend about an hour or so at each home.

HERstory -- Honoring and Celebrating Women through the Ages
All of us are well acquainted with the version of the past called History. In this era of the visible empowerment of women, including the election of our first female Vice President, we are offering a rebranded snapshot of the past from a woman’s point of view. Allow us to introduce you to HERstory; a unique storytelling about eight women who dared to follow their vision and dreams in times when the world stage was dominated by men. Each story highlights how two women interacted with each other and were inspired by the other in their lifetime, describing their challenges and successes in their own voices. HERstory Writers & Performers: Louise Vogel and Catherine Hampton

The North Beach Neighborhood through Time
San Francisco has over 400 officially designated local, state, and national landmarks. That's a lot of history in 7 1/2 square miles. The North Beach district alone is home to 33 of these landmarks! Each building, each park and each monument has a story of its own, and quite often a fascinating bit of history behind it. This month's Armchair Travel adventure takes us on an incredible "time travel" exploration of our North Beach neighborhood. Native San Franciscan and author Catherine Accardi will share then and now photographs to explore and explain what has happened that makes our community so unique - with historic images juxtaposed alongside the present day - for a journey through time that will open your eyes to the history of this amazing neighborhood. Join us on Zoom!

HOW TO HAIL A RIDE WITH AN APP, OR YOUR PHONE
Now that we are moving about again, NEXT wants to help you get where you are going. Call us for a ride to the doctor or grocery store, or use one of the many transportation services available in our city.
In June, NEXT sent our members a video outlining how to order a ride using your smartphone. Here is it again: https://youtu.be/93R2ZrpHFz0. We apologize for leaving out one of our favorite ride-sharing platforms, GoGo Grandparent. It’s wonderful that companies are focusing on not just giving a ride, but truly being of service. Onward and GoGo are two companies that don’t require a smartphone app, and will help you in and out of the car, and even carry your groceries if you need that.
And of course, there’s still Yellow Cab (415-333-3333) and Flywheel (415- 970-1300) – these companies have paid a hefty fee to serve SF and deserve our patronage as well. In fact, you may qualify for subsidized taxi rides through the City’s Essential Trip Card program.
However you prefer to roll, as our City opens up, we hope to see you for one of our events, such as Lunch with The Bunch, Happy Hour, Coffee & Conversation, Group Walks, trips to museums and other fun destinations.
