Blockbuster exhibition 'Toulouse-Lautrec and the Masters of Montmartre' is now open
Discover the sights and sounds of Toulouse-Lautrec’s thrilling Bohemian Paris in this dazzling exhibition of works by Toulouse-Lautrec and the Masters of Montmartre, opening today, 26 April at Victoria Art Gallery.
From troupes of cancan dancers to the legendary 'Chat Noir,' and the unforgettable characters of the Moulin Rouge, Toulouse-Lautrec & the Masters of Montmartre will feature 100 original posters from 1890s bohemian Paris in a fresh look at this era of artistic fervour and social revolution.
This is the only chance to see Lautrec’s complete collection of posters exhibited together in the UK before it moves to its permanent home at the Musée d’Ixelles in Belgium, following a five-year international tour.
We at The Bath Magazine were lucky enough to catch up with the curator of the exhibition, Katharine Wall. Click here to read the full article!
Exhibiting until 29 September. Gallery open from 10.30am–5pm. Visit victoriagal.org.uk for more information.

You'll love our marvellous May magazine which features a collection of great reading by our team of wonderful writers as well as beautifully presented advertising by Bath's best businesses.
This month we went to the Holburne Museum and narrowly avoided being doodled by Mr Doodle (who is only happy when doodling), and asked him why doodling is the biggest thing in his life – and why he’s been doodling obsessively in the museum… and in Bath. We also spoke to fashion director of The Times Anna Murphy who is coming to The Bath Festival and has some uplifting advice about how to feel fabulous whatever your age. There are more interviews with journalist and art critic Will Gompertz, actor Tamsin Greig and jazz trombonist Dennis Rollins. You can also find out about the amazing new Dyson Cancer Centre at the RUH in an in-depth piece about this innovative project, which has been supported enthusiastically by the local community. Plus so much more!
Every month we deliver 15,000 copies door to door, but if you don't get a copy at home then you can pick up a copy at many places around town and from our floor stands at: Waitrose, Sainsbury [Green Park], M&S Foods in Twerton, Tesco in Weston Village, and at The Holburne Museum.
Click here to enjoy the digital version of our current issue!
And if you would like to have a copy sent in the post every month, then we offer a postal subscription for just £33 for 12 issues, £18 for six issues or buy a copy for just £4.25. UK mainland prices. For Euro and World zone subscription prices – click here to subscribe on our website.

WEEKEND RECIPES | SPRINGTIME SUPPER
|
|
|
|
Words by Melissa Blease
Asparagus Carbonara
Speedy, seasonal and elegant, this super springtime supper is perfect for either a casual affair or a celebration dinner.
Don't discard those unused egg whites! Store them in the fridge for a light omelette the following morning, use them for making meringues or pour each one into separate compartments of an ice cube tray, freeze until solid and then transfer to a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag. To thaw, defrost in the fridge overnight.
Ingredients (serves 4)
1 large bunch of asparagus (you'll need around 350g pre-trimmed weight in total) 320g dried linguine 3 tbsp olive oil 60g smoked bacon lardons 6 egg yolks A pinch of dried red chilli flakes (optional) 80g Parmesan cheese, finely grated (plus extra to sprinkle)
Method
1. Snap the woody stems from the asparagus spears and set to one side. Finely chop the remaining stems, keeping the asparagus tips intact.
2. Put a large pan of salted water over a high heat and add the woody stems. When the water starts to boil, lift out and discard the stems, then add the linguine and cook according to the instructions on the packet.
3. Meanwhile, lightly beat the egg yolks together in a small bowl, then add the Parmesan, chilli flakes (if using) and a generous sprinkle of freshly-ground black pepper.
4. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the lardons and sauté for 2-3 minutes until the fat starts to render down and begins to colour. Stir in the asparagus stems and tips and continue to sauté for about 3 minutes or until the asparagus has softened.
5. Drain the cooked linguine (reserving a cup of pasta water) and add to the frying pan. Mix the pasta, lardons and asparagus together well, and add a splash of the hot pasta water (while stirring continuously) to bind everything together.
6. Remove from the heat and quickly add the egg mixture, which will cook in the residual heat in the pan. Stir well until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
7. Serve immediately in warm bowls topped with extra black pepper and more grated Parmesan.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
Ursula is an art magazine published by the Hauser & Wirth gallery organisation. It’s a serious and impressive journal and much more than a brand extension, but predictably luxurious all the same. It features essays, profiles, films, interviews and photography by some of the most thought-provoking writers and artists around and when it went on hiatus a few years back we really missed it.
This latest issue (No10) is focused on Pierre Huyghe, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Anna Maria Maiolino, Josh Kline and Will Arbery. Each copy includes an exclusive, limited edition flexi disc featuring two previously unreleased compositions from the film score of Wu Tsang’s Moby Dick; or, The Whale. | £16

BRLSI host talk by Byron expert Professor Diego Saglia
BRLSI will be hosting a special talk on 30 April at 7.30pm by Byron expert Professor Diego Saglia who will explore the poet’s relevance today and people’s continued fascination with him.
Byron, who was famed for his travels and flamboyant and scandalous life as well as his poetry and fervent support for liberal causes, was just 36 when he died of fever at Missolonghi in Greece where he was supporting the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.
Professor Saglia’s talk will focus on some of the innovative features of his works, especially those that still speak to us today: fragmented and unstable identities, the travel narrative, his conflicting Britishness and Italianness, environmental change and crisis, and the many forms of love and passion.
Works considered will include Byron’s diaries and autobiographical poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, also Darkness, Manfred and Don Juan, as well as the paintings these inspired.
