The bank opened in 1913 at the corner of Main & First streets (present day Copenhagen & First)

Members of the town’s volunteer fire department valiantly attempted to battle a late-night blaze in the bank building, but the flames were beyond the capacities of the bucket brigade. All they could do was stand with residents and watch as the building burned to the ground.

Established in 1913 in a simplified Beaux Arts-style building, the Santa Ynez Valley Bank – the first financial institution serving the Santa Ynez Valley – projected an image of stability and permanence for the new town.

Although the bank lost its building and equipment in the fire, everything in the fire-proof vaults was saved. Supplies and cash were brought in from a Santa Barbara bank as the vault was too hot to access, and business resumed Monday morning in a temporary location in the nearby pool hall.

A new bank building was constructed at the same location at a cost of $11,722.96

Construction of a new bank building began immediately. Safety and security features included 12-inch thick reinforced concrete for the exterior walls and vaults, with the addition of a steel lining for the vaults. There was no wood except for the doors and window frames. It was deemed “a symbol of cooperation, unity and determination.” Practically the entire town – more than 500 people – were present for opening day festivities on May 17, 1926. Tours of the facility were followed by a program and dancing at Dania Hall.

The former bank building is now home to The Copenhagen House

For more than 100 years, the building was home to a bank. It is one of the many architectural gems from Solvang’s early years that remains in downtown, redressed in Danish Provincial style.

All our best,
