Welcome to Last Chance Hotel's Newsletter

Welcome to the September issue of the Last Chance Hotel newsletter, a brief round up of the last month's activities, arrivals, departures, fundraisers and everything which keeps the charity ticking over, and our volunteers busy. The crazy holiday season is now over, but that doesn't mean we can be complacent; we will not turn our backs on animals in need... Ollie the French Bulldog pup is a case in point; he is a fun loving 3 month old pup who deserves a chance of living a full life, and we will give him that chance. So many people have donated towards his consultation in Bristol next week, and we are humbled by their generosity and beautiful comments on his dedicated JustGiving page. We are still short of our target, but so grateful to those who have contributed towards the huge bill that we face. To see this little guy playing, wearing his nappy, so curious and fun loving, is heartwarming.

Ollie is one of many who have suffered at the hands of intensive breeding. As this newsletter is being prepared, we have two Chihuahua girls, ex breeding bitches, looking for quiet foster homes; transport is currently being arranged for their freedom ride to Cornwall. They will now know love, fresh air, good food, and grass beneath their paws....

And that is what Last Chance Hotel is all about.

New Arrivals

During August two Akitas came into rescue, but not together. Taz, an old boy of about 10 years, had ended up in the pound for the second time, but his owners wanted nothing to do with him. Instead of a sad ending to this boy's life, he now has a new one in a loving Cornish home; his skin and coat have improved immensely in just a few weeks. Jodie's owner became unwell and had to go into a care home, so we stepped in to offer her an emergency foster home. This gorgeous girl, now known as Kaz, (as she didn't respond to Jodie) is awaiting her special end of life sofa. A bouncy lurcher pup by the name of Tarquin found foster very quickly, and Duchess, a grand lady with a name to match, is now ensconced in her foster home, enjoying plenty of cuddles. Sweet little Molly's owner has been hospitalised, so she needs a temporary foster home whilst waiting for their reunion.

Stop press: we have just heard that Kaz's foster family have 'failed' with her, and she will be making a permanent home with them!

These are just a few of the recent incomers. If you would like to follow their progress, and find out more about all the others, please check out our Facebook page and website lastchancehotel.org. We now have a news section on the Home page; dogs are constantly being assessed in their foster homes and information changes regularly.

Happy Departures to New Homes

It's always a good idea to register with us, and have your home check done, so that you can be ready for when the right dog comes along. For Buddy and Barney, two Yorkies, this plan of action worked 100%. They had barely spent a day on our Facebook page and website before their home checked adopters applied for them, and are now part of a fab four dog family. Alfie and Pepsi also came on to our books as private rehomes, and have both now found their new forever sofas.

Fundraisers

Shoreline Tattoo in St Ives worked their socks off all day on Saturday 25th August, as a huge fundraiser for Last Chance Hotel. Their Flash Day, a first come first served event, with specific tattoo designs available, raised a massive £2377!!

The LCH vet bill averages £2500 a week, so this is one week we don't have to worry about...Our grateful thanks to Beth, Mike, Cherry, Les and Meggan, and to all those who came to support this fabulous day!

It was a busy Bank Holiday weekend for LCH, with attendance at the Cornwall VW Owners Club Jamboree at Stithians Showground.  Many thanks to the CVWOC for having us and to all who came to see us; we met so many lovely pooches and their doting owners, and our fellow stall holders were very generous with donations to our tombola stall.

Pictured above: Far top: Jester who is a Last Chancer from about 6 years ago, looking magnificent; beautiful Betsy, who is an “end of life” foster, such a happy girl and very much loved, Jack, the JRT, another Last Chancer, cute as a button, and two lovely visitors to the stand, Lizzie on the left, in her usual relaxed pose, and William the Yorkie, with their ‘dads’, Paul and Dave Charles, and Megan, our volunteer helper, looking on.

Our fab avid supporter Andrew Russell has done it again...organising two dog shows in the space of a month. The first was the LCH Online Dog Show, which had loads of entries, and fab photos, all from the comfort of our armchairs. Best in Show went to Daisy, on the left, and reserve Best in Show to Denzil, well done to both!

Following this, a brilliant turnout for his Fun Dog Show at Crofthandy Village Hall on 2nd September. The weather was kind, everyone had a great time and our two show winners couldn't have been happier. Many thanks to all those who came along, to Andrew for organising, Sarah Higgins for the difficult task of judging so many lovely entrants, and LCH volunteers Carla, Gina and Debra who kept everyone supplied with refreshments and cake.

Pic shows Sarah Higgins, centre, BIS winner Mimi with proud mum Natasha on the left, and reserve BIS Finlay recently adopted by Sally.

If you would like to help LCH with a fundraising event, please contact the team with your idea on 01209 281159 or email Louisa on louisa@lastchancehotel.org.

Thank you!

Pets at Home

Support Adoption for Pets is a fab charity affiliated to Pets at Home, and every so often they run scratch card fundraising drives within the stores. The last one which ran during June resulted in two generous donations from the Bodmin and Pool branches. Many thanks to all the PAH staff for your continued support, you are all amazing.

LCH volunteer Glo Curl is pictured with Pool branch assistant manager Stephen, and other staff members, in front of a van full of PAH goodies just picked up from the Love to Give campaign! And Bodmin branch staff proudly hold the cheque from their branch.

Amazonians.....

Look what arrived in the post, - 3 super training leads and a couple of ‘Adopt me’ harnesses. Thank you so much Jill Osborne, and Bess, for these gifts from our Amazon Wishlist, they will be put to good use!

Tyacks present.....

Following their Rockfest in May, Tyacks Hotel in Camborne made a fab donation to Last Chance Hotel. A big thank you, once again, for your valued support. Pictured here at the cheque presentation is LCH volunteer Carolyn Harding with her Last Chancer Dolly, and Tyacks manager Sam Bowen. (Photo credit BID Camborne)

Coppice Inn Quiz Night

Huge thanks to Michael Tott, quizmaster extraordinaire, and the Coppice Inn, Lanner for the Quiz Night on 2nd September. It was a great night, the LCH team had a lot of fun with the highlight of the evening being Michael Tott doing the Benny Hill run around the pub during the theme tunes round. Thank you Michael, your ongoing fundraising events help no end.

Houndsinpounds again...

Another donation from this hard working online auction group, who raise funds for many different animal charities. Have a look at their Facebook page to see what's on offer in their current auction. Thank you to all who take part!

High View Farm Update

Building renovations on the farmhouse continue, and outside more fencing has been installed, making a permanent enclosure for the chickens, keeping them safe. They now have a very large area to wander, doing what chooks would naturally do, and are laying well and looking great. The ducks now have their own house and area, and Womble and Billy have another new 'toy', donated by a lovely supporter,  and assembled by 'Irish' Dave and Phil, with some help from SB Hennertz, and others!

The Great Ragwort Pull over the weekend of 11/12th August resulted in a huge pile of this invasive weed, thanks to Vicky Webber and friends, - well done ladies and thank you so much for giving up your time for us!

Happy Gotcha Day!

“Gotcha Day” is the name given to the day a lucky hound first came into his or her forever home. Here are some tributes of that celebration of love

POPPY

Poppy is the most loving soul ever and on 25th August it will be 1 year since she came home with me from her brilliant Last Chance foster mum Debbie. Thank you all so much for this chance to be together and run madly through the fields, walk slowly in the rain and cuddle up on the sofa. Anna

JESTER

Happy gotcha day Jester! 2 years ago your adoption became official. You were a nervous little bundle when your aunty Selena Vigo Di Gallidoro dropped you off here. It didn't take you long to settle and wrap me around your paws. Love you boy! AR

BRUCE

So we have now had the amazing Bruce for a year. We are exceptionally lucky to have found him the way we did and be lucky enough to be able to adopt him. I couldn't imagine my life without him. SE

NORM

Happy gotcha day Norm. Two years of laughs, cuddles and mopping up excitement wees! Thanks LCH CG

SHAY

Happy 3rd Gotcha Day, handsome fella. What a year it’s been (beach trips being a regular theme!) with lots of walks in the snow and many new places to visit. Who would have thought that the pup who was terrified of water would now be jumping through waves? 😁 You were an absolute star at the Hidden Valley, ignoring the chickens when the daft Dalmatian tried chasing them (I’m sure you laughed at his human when he went flying across the grass 😉). Being stopped wherever we go for people to give you compliments is now a regular thing but, of course, we already know you are something special. EL

Did you Know?

We have a NEW LAST CHANCE HOTEL FACEBOOK PAGE, which aims to keep you updated with all the latest news on the dogs and much more. Please click on the link and ‘like’ our page.

We have other Facebook groups: LAST CHANCE HOTEL AUCTION runs auctions throughout the year, with loads of fab stuff up for grabs, raising vital funds for our vet bill.

Our LCH ONLINE DOG SHOW group allows you to show off your pooches from the comfort of your armchair, and also helps raise funds for our vet bill.

Our Amazon Wishlist, by which you can purchase specific goodies and have them delivered to us, is a lovely way to send a present for our animals! The link will take you straight there for a browse of all sorts of goodies from toys and chews to harnesses, coats and lovely food.

There are also ways to help raise funds for us whilst you’re shopping online, which don’t cost you a penny. Easyfundraising is a scheme whereby you can shop at many popular retailers such as Amazon, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, and they will donate a small percentage (usually 1%) of your order to the charity of your choice, with no extra expense to you. Giveasyoulive is a similar scheme, with over 4000 retailers involved.

Like all charities, we depend almost entirely upon the generosity of our wonderful supporters. We have several ways in which monetary donations can be made: PayPal is easy and convenient for the many people who hold an account.

JustGiving provides another way of donating and also an opportunity for individuals to fundraise for us through sponsorship of a personal challenge. In addition, it allows us to claim back the Gift Aid part of the donation which can add vital pennies.

If neither of these methods are suitable, then we are more than happy to accept donations via direct bank transfer using the following information:

Barclays
Last Chance Hotel
Sort code: 20-67-19
Account no: 73797503
(Do drop us a quick email with your details so we can say thanks!)

or cheques, if sent to our Treasurer, at the address given at the bottom of this newsletter.
Thank you from Team LCH and all the animals!

Dogs are our bridge - our connection to who we really are, and most tellingly, who we want to be.
