Some of you might have only opened this newsletter for this next bit: a giveaway!
Kathleen West has been compared to Liane Moriarty, but at the rate West is going, it might not be long until people start making the reverse comparison, too. West’s books hit upon our human nature in such a way that we can always see some part of ourselves in her characters and their actions. Maybe a lot of ourselves. :)
Here was my review for Are We There, Yet?, released last year in hardcover and the paperback this past week:
If you are a parent, you will recognize yourself in this book - and you won't just see yourself in one of the parent characters, you'll see yourself in each of them. And our kids are all these kids in the book. At times stressful (the choices! the reactions!) and other times endearing, West captures the very real nature of parenting tweens as they embark upon using phones and social media while navigating the tumultuous phase of new school experiences and new adolescence. Additionally, the ways parents try to balance careers and their own life hurdles while wanting to put their children first, but not always succeeding because you just can't do it all perfectly? This is what West does best. In one chapter, you'll be thinking poorly of a character because of their actions and reactions, but then she deftly brings you 'round again to root for that same character because West knows and understands people.
Her next book, Home or Away, comes out March 29th!
