International Mathematical Modeling Challenge

Do you have what it takes to solve a real-world maths problem? Heading into its fourth consecutive year in Australia, the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge is a team competition for up to four secondary students and one team advisor that aims to promote mathematical modelling to solve problems of real-world importance. Since 2016, participation numbers have tripled each year, making this widely popular and completely free to enter challenge essential for mathematical modelling for secondary schools in Australia. To register your interest for 2019, go to www.immchallenge.org.au

Leadership development scholarships

Funding grants of up to $1500 are currently available to women who work in schools to support their participation in a leadership development program. The funding is suitable to both teaching and non-teaching female school staff. Expressions of interest close 30 November. Go to www.nesli.org/funding

[featured resource] Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All

Steven Leinwand, Daniel J. Brahier & DeAnn Huinker

Effective teaching and learning occurs when there are clear mathematical goals. In the classroom this can mean implementing tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving, using and connecting different mathematical representations, and facilitating meaningful mathematical discourse through purposeful questioning. This professional resource explores these principles (and others), and identifies the inevitable obstacles that need to be solved when attempting change.

[reduced] Navigating through Reasoning and Proof in Grades 9–12

Maurice J. Burke, Jennifer Luebeck, Tami S. Martin, Sharon M. McCrone, Anthony V. Piccolino, Kate J. Riley

Expanding from ‘reasoning to obtain solutions’ to ‘reasoning to justify ideas and validate results’ is a significant development for students. Activities highlight the cycle of exploration, conjecture and justification. Supported by blackline masters, the activities build on and extend problem solving and reasoning to include proof through Number, Algebra, Geometry, Data Analysis and Probability, and Measurement. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM which includes further reading for teachers, files for the blackline masters, and computer applications for students to use in their investigations.
