It pays to have connections, doesn't it?
It just so happens that my good friend and 6th grade teacher (who turns 97 next month!) has a niece who purchased the historic home of Colonel Benjamin Prichard. Never heard of him? I hadn't either, and I've studied the Civil War extensively. Turns out, this was one of those unexpected glimpses into history that I just love!
Colonel Prichard served in the 4th Michigan, which captured Jefferson Davis after he made a break for freedom. You may recall the story of the Confederate president escaping in women's clothing (image below). It was probably just a cloak, but a fugitive in drag made a more sensational story. Anyhoo, Colonel Prichard was the fellow in charge of that operation. I knew Michigan had a claim to fame for this capture. I just hadn't known the commander's name...or realized that he hailed from the same county as me. How had I missed that? When my teacher told me she could arrange a private tour of the house, I jumped at the opportunity!
