“I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead; I lift my eyes and all is born again.”
Sylvia Plath
Reflection
This is a reminder that every moment is unique. Every time "I lift my eyes" I can choose to see the world in a new light. My previous experiences are a support when I orientate myself in the world. But more often than I want, my preconceptions lead me to acting predictably and mechanically. With the result of closing the door to the endless possibilities life offers me.
Today's exercise
Next time you listen to someone you know, try to let go of all your prior knowledge, all your preconceived notions, all your judgements about your friend. Release all distractions and be present with the person here and now. Even if the person is saying something you have heard before, try to be in touch with why the person is saying what they are saying. What needs is the person trying to meet right now? Do you recognize these needs in yourself?
