 In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this Sunday our breast cancer survivors were honored with a beautiful corsage and a gift bag.  Dr. Alyce Emerson with her daughter, Kellye coordinated the ceremony. The ceremony was opened with prayer by Rev. Ron Jones, whose mother, the late Evelyn Jones championed the recognition of breast cancer survivors for many years here at HPGMBC. The survivors recognize were Sisters Gloria Conner (23 years free), Jacqueline Maupin (13 years free), Jewell Morton (18 years free), Charlie Peoples Brown (9 years free), Marion Hall, Patricia Leavell (3 years free), Thelma White, and Lisa Molinari (less than 1 year free). The ceremony concluded with Dr. Emerson stating that these survivors exhibited characteristics of Proverbs 31:10-31 , trustworthy,  does good not evil, provides for her family, and is industrious. Interim Pastor Peoples closed with words of encouragement and an admonishment for us all to recognized the God's Healing Power.

As we wrapped up our extensive study of Paul during the months of August & September, for the month of October, we will learn about another great character of the Bible, Joseph. As his story is detailed in the Old Testament in the book of Genesis, we will discover how this amazing man overcame being sold into slavery to becoming a great ruler in Egypt.

Here we will feature recipes from the 40 Year Christian Group. This week's recipe was submitted by Sister Alyce Emerson from Nutrition Education Program, UK Cooperative Extension Service.

Banana Pancakes

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

• 2 large very ripe bananas
• 1 cup low-fat milk
• 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
• 11/2 tablespoons vanilla extract
• 11/4 cups all-purpose flour
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
• 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
• Nonstick cooking spray

Optional Topping

• Nonfat light vanilla yogurt
• Peanut butter
• Sliced bananas
• Cinnamon

Directions

1. Wash hands with warm water and soap, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
2. Preheat a skillet or griddle on the stove over medium-low heat.
3. In a medium bowl, mash the very ripe bananas using a fork or masher. Stir in the milk, brown sugar, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
4. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Mix just until the batter is moistened with no dry spots remaining. Batter will be lumpy. Fold in nuts if using.
5. Spray the heated skillet or griddle with nonstick cooking spray. Drop about a 1/4 cup of the batter into sections of the pan and spread out each into a 4-inch round.
6. Cook pancakes until bubbles form on top and the edges start to brown, about 6 to 8 minutes. Flip and continue cooking until the bottoms of the pancakes are golden brown and easily release from the pan, about 3 to 4 minutes more.
7. Transfer the pancakes to a warm plate. Repeat, cooking the remaining batter.
8. To serve, stack 2 pancakes on a plate and top with desired toppings. Serve immediately.
9. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.

Current Focus: To see my children graduate from college.

Career: I was a medical transcriptionist. I supported cardiologists for 14 years before making a switch to
the hotel industry. I did that for 4 years. Then I got injured. Talk about pain! It is painful to sleep. It is painful to stand. This pain has tried to take over my life. But it can’t touch my calling. It doesn’t 
interfere with my ministry! Let me stand up to direct the choir and I am pain free!

Why this Career?: GOD is providing a way for me to move from “career” to “calling.” My calling is directing and singing - moving the heart to worship. Many musicians like to sing at happy events. But, I know I am walking in purpose when I bring comfort.

My niche is funerals. Heard of wedding singers? Well, I’m the funeral singer and that’s an honor! GOD uses me to touch the heart that is low. I can relate to a family that is mourning because I’ve been there. Since 2012, I have buried a sister, 2 brothers and both of my parents. I know heart ache. I also know JESUS!

JESUS is my hope! Believers and non-believers can feel that when I sing at funerals. They tell me so.
When someone who doesn’t have a relationship with JESUS tells me that my song gave them hope I
know that I know that I KNOW I have been on assignment. That’s a blessed assurance.

What do you want your church family to know about you?: I grew up in the House of GOD. That is my home church and my family. I am grateful for the way my family prepared me to serve here at other
congregations.

I think the House of GOD and HPGMBC share that family feel. I thank HPGMBC for welcoming me in. There are so many nuances at HPGMBC. Like, I love how HPGMBC says, “Horton Nation.” At the House of GOD, it would be, “Mabson Nation.”  If we said “Mabson Nation” that would be the offspring of my father and his siblings. How many people is that? I don’t know! I do know that when my Dad passed, he was the patriarch of a family  (children, grands, great grands and great-great grands) that numbered 139.

People think all the Mabsons are into music! I laugh as I think that is kinda true. As a child, everyone
had to do something! Play an instrument, sing…have an art of praise…and use it.. WORK for JESUS!

My greatest joy when I work with HPGMBC is inviting someone to lead a song for the first time! I don’t ever want to embarrass anyone! BUT, I also don’t want anyone to pass on the joy of singing because they’re not “perfect”. You may not sing like the recording artist but that doesn’t mean you can’t sing. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t sing. Please, don’t let the rocks cry out for you. Take the mic!

When a “newbie” takes the mic and doesn’t put it down, I can see their happiness. Helping them find
that confidence, that new place of praise…wow! That’s my joy!

What can the church do for you?: Keep loving China. Keep putting her to work for JESUS. Keep
challenging her to know JESUS more and to represent HIM well.

What do you want our church to know about GOD? : The first time I visited HPGMBC it was to sing with a group made up of members from the House of GOD. I was a teenager. You never could have told me that as an adult mother I would be part of HPGMBC’s music ministry and that I would love the members so! I never could have imagined that my teen would be baptized here and become an active member of your youth group. But GOD’s plans are not our plans and GOD’s plan is perfect! The Bible says, with love and kindness have I drawn thee. Let love and kindness keep drawing!
