The Network at the EUSEW 2018: Session on "EU opportunities for the energy transition in the Mediterranean and GCC regions"

The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network in cooperation with MEDENER organise on June 6, in Brussels a session on "EU opportunities for the energy transition in the Mediterranean and GCC regions" during the main EUSEW Policy Conference Programme.

The session aims to discuss the leading policies, technologies and best practices that can unlock the clean energy potential in the Mediterranean & the Gulf (GCC) regions. Emphasis is given on the drivers and the challenges of the transition towards clean energy that is currently taking place and how EU stakeholders can engage and establish win-win partnerships in these regions, at a policy, technology/industry and research level. It will highlight the parts of the relevant value chain that hold the best potential for innovation and untapped investment.

The New Oil Green Hydrogen from the Arabian Gulf
Hydrogen can be made from sunshine and water in the Gulf. Land is abundant and cheap and in recent years the Gulf countries have demonstrated the lowest cost solar energy on the planet. The production of green hydrogen for local and overseas markets has become competitive and could become a true replacement for hydrocarbons in the future. Frank Wouters and Ad van Wijk have taken a deeper look at the business case for green hydrogen as the “new oil”.

“Hydrogen as a Game Changer in MENA”, High level Roundtable at the European Business Summit, 23-24 May 2018 Brussels, Belgium
Mr. Frank Wouters, Director of the EU GCC Clean Energy Network contributed as a speaker at the a high level roundtable entitled Hydrogen as a Game Changer in MENA, in the framework of the European Business Summit. The session was an initiative of Hydrogen Europe and the European Business Summit. Find more information here.

Roundtable dialogue on “Regional Electricity Sector Integration in GCC and MENA, 10 May 2018, Riyadh, KSA
On May 10th, 2018The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, represented by its Director Frank Wouters, participated at the invitation-only roundtable dialogue “Regional Electricity Sector Integration in GCC and MENA: Imperatives & Challenges” organised by the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC), in Riyadh.The primary objective of this roundtable dialogue was to gain a better appreciation of the policy, legislative, regulatory and system operation dimensions for developing an integrated electricity market and cross-border electricity trade in the region. The dialogue has generated new knowledge and insights on this subject and laid the foundations for future discussions with all concerned stakeholders in the region. Find more here.

OMAN Energy & Water, Conference & Exhibition, 30 April - 2 May 2018, Muscat, Oman
Frank Wouters, the Network Director participated at the OMAN Energy & Water and contributed in numerous meetings. He met with EU business actors active in the Oman and the region and with the Ambassador of the Netherlands in Oman, discussing on cooperation potential and synergy among the Network and the embassy services to facilitate energy partnerships and exchange of information among EU and GCC actors.

Clean Energy Study Tour 23-27 April 2018, Germany
EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, in coordination with the Gulf Cooperation Council Secretariat General (GCC SC) organised a successful and very interesting Clean Energy Study Tour in Germany on 23-27 April 2018. High-level delegates and experts from GCC energy authorities participated at the 5-day study tour.
The objective of the Clean Energy Study Tour was to promote the exchange of experiences and know-how with GCC stakeholders on clean energy technologies and applications, mainly on renewables and electricity interconnections.
The agenda included training workshops as well as visits to various state of the art industrial and research clean energy sites, including TransnetBW GmbH, Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Wuerttemberg (ZSW) in Stuttgart and Ulm, Siemens AG at the “Energiepark Mainz”, Uniper SE / RWTH Aachen / PGS at the E.ON Energy Research Center, Institute of Solar Research, DLR and the Institute of Solar Research, etc.

10th Annual MENA New Energy 2018 Summit, 24-25 April 2018, Dubai UAE
The Network was a Supporting Partner of the 10th Annual MENA New Energy 2018 Summit where over 130 Project Developers were set to attend to drive forward their PV, CSP, Wind and Storage projects. Mr. Frank Wouters, Director of the Network contributed as a panellist in the Kuwait Panel on 24 April. More information available here.

1st International Congress on Clean Cooling: A Cool World 18-19 April 2018, Birmingham, UK
The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network participated at the 1st International Congress on Clean Cooling: A Cool World, that took place on 18-19 April 2018 in Birmingham, UK. The meeting was jointly organized by the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Energy Institute. Mr. Andrew Parker, Network Convener of the Working Area Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management was an invited key note speaker.Presenting the Network, providing feedback on workshop entitled Clean Cooling – the new “Frontier Market” for UAE and the GCC region, which took place in Dubai on 9-10 April. Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings: Policies-Technologies and Best Practices, 16-18 April 2018, Medina, KSA
Al – Madinah Al – Munawrah Development Authority, the EU – GCC Clean Energy Technology Network and the Environmental Center for Arab Towns (ECAT), in association also with Blue Wave Media, organised a joint executive training seminar entitled “Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings: Policies-Technologies and Best Practices”, that took place in Medina, KSA on 16-18 April 2018. The training sessions attended public authorities' representatives across the Arab cities and towns. The training sessions material is available at the e-training centre at the Network's website.

Clean Cooling – the new “Frontier Market” for UAE and the GCC region, 9-10 April 2018, Dubai, UAE
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), the EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network and the University of Birmingham in partnership with the Heriot-Watt University co-organised on 9-10 April a ‘clean cool’ workshop exploring ways of meeting the region’s rapidly rising demand for cooling with more sustainable technologies. More than 65 experts from the UAE, the GCC and Europe attended the workshop to discuss the opportunities from a wide range of emerging low-carbon cooling systems and how to cooperate in accelerating their deployment.
His Excellency Dr.Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment and the EU Ambassador H.E. Patrizio Fondi welcomed the participants. You may find the event's info, material and the press release at the event's webpage.

Future Cities Show, 9-11 April 2018, Dubai, UAE
The second edition of the Future Cities Show took place from the 9th to the 11th of April 2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The show highlighted the latest and the most innovative technologies, which are set to change the Future. The Network organised a session on the 2nd day on “Sustainable Smart Cities and Smart Buildings”. The session was moderated by Dr. Haris Doukas, Network's Research Collaboration Specialist. 7th edition of the Smart Grids and Smart Meters Summit, 4-5 April 2018, Dubai, UAE
The 7th edition of the Smart Grids and Smart Meters Summit took place in Dubai, UAE on 4 and 5 April 2018. The Network was among the supporting partners of the event. Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, Energy Technology Expert of the EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network was an invited speaker and presented “The role of smart grids and storage in integrating variable Renewable Energy sources.” More information here.

Kuwait Sustainable Energy and Technology Forum, 3-4 April 2018, Kuwait City, Kuwait
The Network was a proud supporting partner at the Kuwait Sustainable Energy and Technology Summit, that took place on 3 - 4 April 2018, in Kuwait. The event aimed to bring together various stakeholders like ministries, research institutions and industry specialists to focus on sharing the current market trends, technological advancements and future challenges in renewable energy and sustainable development. Mr. Frank Wouters, Network Director, moderated three sessions: the "Development and implementation of renewable energy systems (RES)", the "Opportunities and challenges for integrating energy storage solutions" and “The role of hydrogen in the GCC energy transformation”. UN-Arab Preparatory Meeting on Energy-related Issues for the 2018 Arab Forum on Sustainable Development and the High Level Political Forum, 27-28 March 2018, Amman, Jordan
Energy experts from the Arab region wrapped up a two-day meeting at the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The meeting aimed to facilitate stocktaking of progress at national and Arab regional levels towards achieving the 2030 Agenda, to provide inputs to the 2018 Arab Sustainable Development Forum (AFSD) happening at ESCWA in April, which then feeds into the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July. Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, Network’s Energy Technology Expert was invited to contribute and he was the Facilitator of the 3rd discussion focusing on Renewable Energy. More information available here.

The energy transition in the Gulf region: Developments and prospects for EU GCC cooperation, 8 March 2018, Brussels, Belgium
The EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network organised an information session in CEPS on: “The energy transition in the Gulf region: Developments and prospects for EU GCC cooperation”. The aim was to raise awareness among EU clean energy stakeholders such as from business and industry, EU and member state policy-makers, research entities and NGOs regarding the status and prospects of the clean energy market in the GCC region. It highlighted opportunities for the industry to promote EU technologies, best practices and services and develop partnerships with GCC stakeholders. The event material is available on our website.

The Network at the 2nd IEF-EU Energy Day, 13 February 2018, in Riyadh, KSA
EU Delegation in Riyadh organised in cooperation with IEF the second Energy Day, focusing on the Circular Economy. Dr Mustapha Taoumi, Clean Energy Technology Expert of the Network moderated together with Mr Amer Alrajiba, Deputy Sector Head, Energy, Industry & Minerals Sectoral Development Affairs, of the Ministry of Economy and Planning two panel discussions on energy efficiency and waste management, and circular economy challenges and opportunities for the private sector respectively inviting interventions from high-level European Union and Saudi Arabian government and industry representatives. The Network team has developed and launched the EU-GCC Clean Energy Virtual Research Lab. It is a virtual lab-space within the Network's website, where EU and GCC research institutes and laboratories, are able to share their ideas, resources, knowledge, information, and material.
