There are green witches, hedge witches, water witches, psychic witches, kitchen witches, crystal witches—and most witches are some combination. There is even a branch referred to as cottage witchcraft that marries green witchcraft and the cozy aesthetic—surprise surprise, that's where I feel like I fit. I've loved reading about the medicinal and spiritual properties of plants, and how they're used to protect and brighten the home.
I've got quite a few books on the subject, and have many more to read. I thought I'd share a few of my favorite beginner resources in case you too are witch curious! I've put them in order from "light curiosity" about witchcraft to "deeper interest."
- Enchanted Living magazine (formerly Faerie magazine) — All about embracing the magical aesthetic. The artwork is amazing, and worthwhile for that alone. Some issues focus more on witchcraft than others, but they are all a feast for the eyes and mind.
- The Herbiary, The Beastiary, The Crystallary by Maia Toll — Gorgeous in both word and design, and a great place to get started if you're interested in the more uplifting and self-care oriented aspects of witchcraft. Toll focuses on using witchcraft to discover yourself, heal your psychic wounds, and achieve your goals. Each book comes with a set of oracle cards.
- Hedge Witchcraft by Harmonia Saille — A thin volume—a quick and easy read. One of my very favorites from both a research and personal interest perspective. Practical, cozy, and perfect for a beginner. Saille practices hedge witchcraft, which incorporates hedge riding—what I understand to be a form of astral projection. But this volume focuses more on herbs, simple spells, and seasonal rituals.
- Cunning Folk magazine, The Re-Enchantment Issue — Fascinating look at cunning folk, which is a term for those who practiced traditional folk magic in earlier times. It offers a little of everything, from interviews with scholarly types, to simple spells, to short fiction and poetry. I loved everything about it. This one has limited availability; they are just now offering their third and final printing. So if you're interested, don't delay!
