We conclude our look at children in the Bible with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
Luke 2 gives us an insight into Jesus as a child. It teaches about how the boy Jesus stayed behind at the annual Passover Festival. His parents found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his questions.
In the Bible, only Luke, who records the longest and most detailed account of Jesus’ birth and the prophecies and witnesses surrounding it, shares this story from His early years. It happens when Jesus is twelve years old.
In Luke 2:41-47 we learn, (After being lost for a whole day, Jesus was found teaching the elders in the temple.)
Luke 2:48-49 states, “So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
At a young age, Jesus had a divine directive and understands his place in the temple as a necessity.
Jesus fully understands His relationship to God the Father and sees it appropriate to be in His presence on the earth, which was in the Holy of Holies within the Temple.
And we see in Jesus’ statement the fact that His relationship and proximity to the Father takes precedent over all other relationships in His life, including His relationship with His earthly family.
Luke 2:40 gives a summary statement describing Jesus’ development from infancy to age 12: “And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.”
To God Be The Glory for Jesus! At just 12 years old, the Bible says that everyone was amazed at His understanding and the way He answered their questions. It’s clear, through scripture, that wisdom isn’t a factor of age after all!
