Swedish Government Strategy in response to COVID-19

The overall objective of the Swedish Government’s efforts is to reduce the pace of the COVID-19 virus’s spread: to ‘flatten the curve’ so that large numbers of people do not become ill at the same time. According to Prime Minister Stefas Löfven, "Every person in Sweden needs to take individual responsibility. If everyone takes responsibility, we can keep the spread of the virus in  check".

Sweden's unique approach to Coronavirus helps businesses

According to Andreas Hatzigeorgiou, CEO at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, who appeared on the Marketplace Morning Report, the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on businesses in Sweden are dramatic. However, the economic situation could have been worse if the Swedish approach had been more similar to other countries with a complete lockdown. It is a huge advantage that Sweden is highly digitalized, which also limits the negative impacts of the coronavirus crisis. Listen to the interview (in English) here.

Corona impact on Swedish businesses and new Government response measures
  1. Unemployment in Sweden is now increasing faster than during the financial crisis in 2008. People working in the restaurant and hotel industry are the worst affected, as well as staffing agencies, the transport sector and also within retail. Source
  2. The Swedish Export Credit Agency has decided on new guarantees for Swedish exporting companies and their sub-suppliers. With the new guarantee, sub-suppliers get paid more quickly and securely. Source
  3. The Christian Democrats together with other parties in Sweden demand additional state support for companies hit by the coronavirus crisis. The party requires that all companies, regardless of industry, would be able to get compensation for fixed costs, such as rent and leasing agreements, if their turnover has fallen by more than 40%. Source
  4. Companies that are financially affected by the coronavirus can get temporarily reduced employer fees or postpone payment of taxes and fees. Source
  5. Due to the coronavirus crisis, the exchange rates of Swedish krona against the dollar and the euro have fallen to levels that prevailed during the financial crisis, or lower. Source
