Presidential ponderings

The event highlight of any club that holds races is the annual prize giving and our 2018 dinner and award ceremony was no exception.

The evening was superbly organised by Ila Pearson with special guest Steve Abraham (of long distance cycling fame) handing out not just our more established trophies but also some news ones that have been incorporated in 2018 to encourage racing and competition between our women.

Ian Maconnachie has decided to stand down as our Club and Membership Secretary after taking on the roles in April 2017. He's done a fantastic job keeping tabs on our ever-growing membership base and being the outward focal point to external organisations we interface with. On behalf of the club thank you Ian! This does leave the positions open and if anyone is interested in taking on the role please do get in contact with me.

Furthermore, we are moving entirely to online banking from now on and no more cheques will be accepted for membership or payment for club services.

2019 Time Trial season information

The 2019 Time Trial season may seem a long way away but it won't be long before the first event takes place on Sunday 3 Mar with our Hardriders Open time trial and then the first club TT on Wednesday 27th March which will be our 5 mile "come and try it" event out at Gaydon.

The rest of the schedule will be published soon, we won't be using any new courses next year but will introduce a Saturday race in September. Watch this space for more details.

Club cycling trip to Mallorca

We outline and remind you again of Matt Sleath's proposal for a club cycling trip to Mallorca next Spring.

From interest already received the trip will be for the period 23/03/19 to 30/03/19 and based at Puerta Pollensa in northern Mallorca.

The company we will be using is Mallorca Cycling Tours, who will create a bespoke program for us. All levels of cyclist are catered for, with daily guided rides including support vehicles etc.

Costs: Half board accommodation at Aparthotel Duva. Guided rides for 6 days all abilities catered for, bars and gels. £750 (based on two people sharing a multiroom apartment) and Mallorca airport transfers

Return Flights estimated: £100 (plus £85 to transport bike)
Bike Hire: £20 per day for a mechanical Ultegra standard bike.

Payments: Payment for flights and a non-refundable deposit for accommodation would be required in early January, once we have a better idea of numbers we will firm up the payment details.

Matt also posted details of the trip on Facebook on 20th November, but you can also get in touch with him direct to confirm your interest.

Please tell me your story

A message from the Press Officer:

Please don't forget to email me direct with any race or TT reports/results. A lot of members put race reports etc up on Facebook, but in spite of previous requests, send nothing to me. With such an active group page, it's easy to miss these reports, or see them too late to get them in the press. The above story on Katie Pamphlett's recent success was featured in the Banbury Guardian on 15th November and one I nearly missed.

Also, it would be great if more members would consider writing a blog for the website page. Any subject relating to cycling is welcome as a quick look at the blog page will reveal.

Thank you, Roger

2019 BSCC Road Race

Mike Gillett has kindly offered to run the club's 2019  year's road race which will be held on Sunday 26th May for Cat 3/4 men in the morning and the British Cycling Women's Team Series in the afternoon.

Already provisionally booked are the race HQ, paramedics and motorbike outriders which are the key elements to ensuring a successful event. Entries will go live on the BC website from January 1st.

Annual Dinner & Prize Giving

This year's awards dinner and prize giving, held at the Castle at Edge Hill, was a great success. Pictured are two people who played a large part in making it such a memorable evening - Ila Pearson and guest speaker Steve Abraham. Steve is seen presenting Ila with the Golden Age Cycles Trophy, a new award for women members.

Eighteen trophies were competed for in 2018, with Simon Kisley and Keith Barcock (below) both winning three trophies, whilst Simon Bull (below) and junior Blaine Carpenter each won two. As a result of the club’s increasing female membership, Naomi de Pennington and Ila Pearson became the first recipients of two new trophies awarded to women riders.

Finally, probably the most well deserved award of the evening went to Mark Boyles who was awarded the President’s Trophy. (see race squad news below)

All the 2018 trophy winners are listed on the website news page.

Don't forget the mudguards rule

The only exception to this new club rule is if dry roads and weather are forecast. Watch the club's Facebook group for any annoucements.

Also remember rear mud flaps are strongly encouraged.  Broadribb Cycles hold a small stock of BSCC branded flaps and they cost £8 each and can be fitted by anyone with basic bike maintenance abilities.

Race Squad news

The race squad was Mark Boyles's vision. He wanted to raise the profile of the club and get it back into competition with the introduction of a more organised and structured approach. His race squad proposal has been an outstanding and rapid success and his recent award of the Presidents Trophy was well and truly deserved.

Meanwhile, training for next season continues with the regular Wednesday turbo training nights well underway.

Rising Stars - youth section news

A further two Rising Star/Go-Ride sessions were held in November with a regular attendance of around 13 riders. Lee and Katherine continue to put in a lot of effort to implement structured sessions on gradually improving their skills, confidence and fitness. Hopefully, 2019 will see more of them entering a few local Go-Ride events.

There will only be one session in December, planned at the moment  for 15th, as usual starting at 9.30am at Banbury Rugby Club's ground. Any changes will be posted on the Rising Stars Facebook page.
