The Justice Of God
Stephen Heleman

Each week we will start our study of who God is by saying this prayer, "God, I want to see you as you are, the real God."

Why Isn't Life Fair?

There are two common questions both believers and unbelievers struggle with:
1) Why do bad things happen to good people?
2) Why do good things happen to bad people?
What they are really asking is, “Why isn’t life fair?”

God created a perfect world for mankind to live in fellowship with Him. However, when Adam and Eve chose to believe Satan’s lie, they brought the first judgement (Genesis 3). At that point, man was separated from God. We live in a broken world because of sin. The good news is that Jesus will return one day for the final judgement (Revelation 20) and create a new perfect world. Until then, we must live in a fallen world where life doesn’t always seem fair. However, what we see as injustice is really delayed justice.

You Don't Want Life To Be Fair.

In reality, we don’t want life to be fair, because we don’t want God to give us what we really deserve. In Genesis 18, we read about the city of Sodom. It was a city with so much sin that God decided that it must be destroyed. In verse 25 Abraham appeals to God’s justice. The point God was making was that there is not one righteous person. About 2,000 years later, in Romans 3:10-12, Paul wrote that there is not one righteous person. This is still true today. When we compare ourselves to the only righteous One, Jesus, it becomes easy to see reality. We are all unrighteous and fairness would call for an eternity apart from God. But, there is Good News...

Jesus Paid The Price.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. 1 Peter 3:18

Jesus did for you what you cannot do for yourself. He took the punishment for your sin.

How Do You Respond To God's Justice?

  • Embrace Jesus as your savior. Rejecting Jesus means that you want to live on your own and stand before the judgement seat of God on your own. On your own, you have no hope of eternity in paradise. With Jesus you are forgiven of all sin and will have eternal life with Him. Have you accepted God's gift of eternal life?
  • Live As If Jesus Will Return Today. When Jesus returns He will ask each of us what we have done with the gifts we were given, just as 2 Corinthians 5:10 tells us. What we do with our time, our talents, and our treasures matters here in this life. What is one thing you can do today that will matter when Jesus returns?
